Mayor #Baraka "committed trespass & ignored multiple warnings" from DHS officials who told him to leave the facility, alleged #AlinaHabba, fmr #Trump defense atty & interim #USattorney for #NewJersey.

"He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody," Habba, wrote on X.

"NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW," she added.

#Baraka, 55, is a #Democrat running for #governor of #NewJersey. Kabir Moss, a spox for Baraka's campaign, confirmed the #arrest at the facility #DelaneyHall.

At least 3 #House #Democrats from NJ were also at the detention center, acc/to a post from Rep #BonnieWatsonColeman.

…The mayor's admin filed a lawsuit in late March to block the opening of the #Newark #immigrant #detention facility, arguing its operators failed to obtain the proper permits & violated city code.

Hmmm. If the facility was in violation of local laws and opened without a permit, this might actually get it shut down. That would be a good thing.

Also, it's kinda difficult to convincingly argue that the city's mayor is "disregard[ing] the law" for inspecting an unpermitted facility that's in violation of city ordinances.
@n1xnx @Nonilex I wonder what other instruments are available to local gov executives. Turning off local utilities (water, power, sewage)? Using the power of police to pull over drivers for violating speeding and other vehicles codes, cited personally. What's in a mayor's, county exec's, and governor's legally authorized toolbox?
