Marcos Dione@ubik @noelreports French accent is very consistent for a reason. Just like Italian or Spaniard or Chinees or Autralian or Cockney or Texan or Valley girl. Most pf the time it has to do with lack of sounds in the original language but also many other aspects of pronunciation, like tone. Chinese for instance uses tones in ways most other panguages don't, so that make most of us terrible at pronounocing Chinese.
TBF, at least US and UK accent in French is pretty pronounced too.
@mdione @noelreports yeah, I've been living in a french-speaking area for a long time, and I understand that. In the same way that I understand that I have an accent when I speak any language which is not my mother tongue (incl. French). But all of the french people I work with speak much better English than Macron, so that doesn't seem like an excuse to me. We're speaking of someone who's been in the international scene for many years and who is also relatively young, he shouldn't sound like a comedy sketch.
@ubik @noelreports you seem to be in an area close to GenĂšve. Of course people are more used to speak other languages. They probably have to do it every day. Meanwhile Macron spends most of his time in France speaking French. :shrug: I guess he doesn't have much time for pronunciation lessons :)
@mdione @noelreports I have no problem accepting that I am privileged to be in that environment, but I am certainly not more privileged than Macron. I went to public school, not elite licées or grandes écoles. Macron meets world leaders at least on a weekly basis, takes part in the European Council, and so on... It's part of his job to be better equipped.
@mdione @noelreports and I understand the take on English speakers, they usually suck at foreign languages, in part because of the "curse" of almost all of the content being available in English, and otherwise because of the self-centredness of their education systems. OTOH, the reality is that English is the lingua franca, whether we agree with it or not, so every national-level politician should be proficient at it.
