Gaah, how do you deal with general feeling of "everything's shit"?

The work thing I used to love and felt like it was impactful (Unity) has been going downhill for many years, and so far does not look like it wants to stop going downhill.

What I dabble with now (Blender) feels useful, but I'm too afraid to take on more impactful areas/work/responsibilities.

And then, everything outside of "just ye olde coding" feels like it is going to shit.

Argh!

@aras I started playing Elite Dangerous again, nothing better than a bit of scifi escapism :D
@floooh I played some of the new Indiana Jones to punch some nazis... but it got tedious after a while :/
@aras @floooh Helldivers 2 is good fun too, and you get to (accidentally) kill lots of space nazis, (your squad-mates)
@aras @floooh hahaaa I love in the trailer how they synced some punches with the music 🥰
gotta try some time

@aras I hope you find a way to keep working on Blender.

Maybe have a look at Godot.

Maybe you have some totally new software idea in mind.

However, don't burn out!
🤗

@aras ignore the news and social media and dig into stuff I love doing - mostly retro computing and working on my game. If you re kindle the love for what you enjoy, things start looking better

@aras my all time short term solution: a bath + audio book 🙃

as for the outside of coding part... it really is bad. but it feels nice that one is not alone.

@aras There is nothing you can do about the way Unity is going. Just accept it and move on. Not your circus, not your monkeys.

Do what you feel is necessary, but no more than that. Duty is the death of love. This cool tinkering with Blender may soon become a chore if you allow things to get too serious.

Other than that, the spring is coming, the days are getting longer. It will get better.

@wolfpld good point wrt sun hours ❤️
@aras @wolfpld yeah just personally this is about the lowest point for me each year with the darkness. It’ll get better man. Take care of yourself.
@neilhenning @aras @wolfpld I can empathize with you. You have spent 20+ years and have seen Unity grow from infancy. I hope you will be able to detach yourself and move on. I come from country where we have sunlight 12 hours a day 365 days. So coming to Canada hits me really bad. What I found useful is going out right as I wake up. Doesnt matter what I do most of the time I just take coffee and sit. Second is having a hobby for me music helps. So I keep learning musical instruments. Take Care!
@aras it sounds like you need something fun. Maybe a new project, maybe a new game to play, maybe a vacation.
Have you ever been to Aruba?
The best snorkeling i have ever seen anywhere, and you just walk from the beach into the water to see it.
It's a super friendly place, everyone speaks English, the water is desalinated so it is drinkable.
I forget where you live but they take both American money or their local currency.
A really great place.
@aras How much of the "going to shit" is impacting your own everyday life in a tangible way here and now? I mean, if you stopped using the Internet and reading the news, how much of the "going to shit" would you still perceive? I'm genuinely asking, because I don't know your situation. In mine, I'm fortunate that a lot of it is only via Internet and news, and I'm very deliberately curating how I consume that in order to minimize the negative impact on my well-being.
@runevision @aras I have definitely noticed an improvement in my every day mood since I deleted Twitter completely
@msinilo @runevision @aras You'd absolutely be my hero if you deleted Twitter completely!!! :D
@msinilo @runevision @aras I mean I know what you mean. You ARE a hero for pulling the plug for you nonetheless ;) 💪

@runevision @aras If you're on the Titanic, and you know it's hit the iceberg, but the deck is still level and the lights are still on, well, you're not impacted so you might as well keep re-arranging the deck chairs... Or, you could acknowledge the reality that ship will be sinking very soon and plan accordingly.

So is the question of how much it's impacting you right now really relevant? Shouldn't we be asking instead how likely it is to impact you in the near future?

@cifram @aras Here or now, or near future… I don’t want to split hairs over where exactly to draw the line. Plan for things you think it makes sense to plan for, of course. My impression was that the original post was more about subjects where one feels powerless.
@aras I deal with it by trying to work on something positive. Working on and with the Bevy gave engine has been my positive outlet. Made some crates for it and trying to make a pico-8 on-ramp for it right now.
@aras that's the feeling of growing up.
You need to find people in real life you can interact with, where the main reason for connection is not just complaining about the world.
Also, there are other places to work.
@StompyRobot oh, I left Unity 3 years ago :)
@aras What's the challenge with blender?
It's a pretty reasonable project, and I'm sure you could do good there.
But it's not a highly paid gig...
@aras
- sleep (enough ... sleep)
- social interactions face to face
- good food (!= fastfood)
- Exercise (can be just walking)
@aras Quite badly. I think finding some little corner that you enjoy noodling in and where there are others you can have nice interactions with is all anyone can really do right now. Everything “big” seems to have gone to shit, there are forces there that seem to want to push it further downhill, but there’s still joy in the small things and other decent folks
@sinbad @aras one has to wonder though how long hiding and noodling in a corner is still ok. Yes, by all means, take care of yourself first. But all it takes for the crazies to firmly establish themselves is for good men to do nothing...
@BuschnicK @aras I’m not suggesting doing nothing. But there’s only so much getting angry at people thousands of miles away can achieve
@aras Also: floofs.
@sinbad hah, yeah. But even the floof is tired today
@aras he’s got the right idea I think
@sinbad eval(“turn into a croissant”);

@aras you plant trees which are not for yourself. Can't ask for more.

Wrt Unity, they're gonna have to keep firing people until their expenses are quite a lot less than their income. It's the IPO overvaluation in reverse.

@aras I'm not sure if I have anything new to contribute, since great comments and points have already been made in the comments.

At least for me, stopping following the news so closely, reducing social media, learning new things and doing something completely outside of the computer screen helped me to get a fresh air from a quite bad time I was in.

So, in any case, I hope you have a great week and year ✨

@aras I don’t know if it’ll work for you, but:
On the personal scale:
I’m trying to stay healthy (eat, sleep, sport, get enough light, avoid infections, …) and get fitter (mild strength & HIIT exercises) and help my family do the same.

On the “world at large” scale:
We’ve identified a bunch of possible scenarios of how world events could negatively impact us and have some rough plans & preparations for mitigation.

Tech/professional:
I’ve started actively preferring…[1/2]

@aras […] and trying to work on projects that solve problems for myself and at the same time reduce my own dependence on Big Tech and increase control over my own data, and which have the potential to do the same for others. Given how tangled up Big Tech has become with the other shit going on, this seems like an area where I can actually make some small difference with my skills and strengths.
[2/2]

@aras Eventually it'll become a normal enough feeling to make you numb to it.

Find something you want to do, or something you have to do, and just do that. All the things going to shit are probably outside of your control, you might as well ignore them.

@aras what makes you afraid of taking on more impactful stuff?
@elliotc Good question! Responsibility, I guess.
@aras what's the worst case scenario? (genuine question if not obvious)

@elliotc worst case wrt blender, or worst case in general?

blender: good question. I start something, get responsible for it, and have no easy way out, I guess. Yes, stupid.

in general: war comes here.

@aras i meant blender. that makes sense! that happened to you before! but i would argue that what went wrong before was somewhat specific to the internal political situation, and depending on the blender politics, you and whatever project you choose may not be as vulnerable to that.

about the other thing, that makes sense and boy howdy the stress it must create.

@aras @elliotc I visited Latvia (i know, the other guys) last year. I stared at the very border every day, visited old partisan bunkers, idea that the whole thing returns felt uneasy…

recently I have no idea what might happen next day, world is in hands of old egoistic men

I am absolutely in no control of current events. That’s somehow… freeing? I try to spend time with my family and friends and try to worry only a little, cancelled twitter, stopped watching youtube…

@aras I don't have a great answer as I've been feeling the same. Just want to let you know you aren't alone in feeling this way.
@aras sun lamp, prioritizing my physical health where possible, and keeping my immediate goals small and reasonable. it... isn't a perfect solution though
@aras Honestly? Closing in and binging stuff to ignore the noise. II know it might not be the answer you're looking for but at this point, I don't have much more going on, sooo...
@aras Like working on my own projects and Factorio helps. But, eh.
@aras Play indie games, I feel like it's the only thing not going to shit right now. Lots of motivated devs working on better worlds than our :)
@aras sorry, it sounds more grim than I intended to but the thing to keep in mind is indie games are love

@aras Well, three times a week I pull myself away from my doom scrolling happy place and do some strength training instead.

Some barbells, a yoga mat and a good book with some routines are all I need. I really try not to half-ass it and improve my personal best when possible. I like the results and doing something physical is a really good balance for me.

It would also be if the world wouldn't go to shit. :)

@aras I found some videos from the last XOXO very uplifting. Especially some that start by acknowledging the situation is certainly bad. Erin Kissane, Cabel Sasser.

Regarding the war... always be ready for the worst case scenario. And I am of the opinion that no war is worth dying for and fleeing to another country is no shame.

@aras I think this is a huge problem in our culture. All the sci Fi is dystopian. No one has a positive vision of the future. What's your utopian near future?

@aras When overwhelmed (which happens a lot these days for all of us!) I try to first tune out of the noise whether geopolitics or products, and second focus on what I can control and improve instead of living in frustration with what I can't.

I know cleaning the kitchen or patching open source does not improve the state of the world. But it does get me to the mental place where I can be effective and have positive interactions with people around me.

@aras Yeah what a world we live in. Feels like it's all unraveling. I personally need to stay away from the news but it's damn hard to actually do it with how everything is going.

Take care of yourself, and try to be outdoors. For me at least that's kind of the only thing that helps.

@joeldevahl @aras +1 on being outdoors. It's the thing that kept me afloat during the pandemic.

@aras Some thoughts because I had a similar feeling a month or two ago but things are looking up:

- It really helps to stop thinking about things that do not depend on you at all. I stopped using algo feeds, and aggressively unfollow people on Mastodon/Bsky who share politics.

- It really helps to take any things that you actually have power to change and are depressed about, and try and fix them.

- You don't owe the world anything; just focus on whatever is fun for you, and impact be damned.

@aras ("the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference")

@aras
- uninstall Twitter
- spend less time online and more time with family. Kids in particular are a lense on the future that's less bleak.
- play more music

There's actually also upsides here, both politically and personally. There is a chance Europe comes out of this with a renewed sense of self and purpose. I for once have finally reached the point where my own mortality is less of a burden and more of a relief. That's a huge burden of my shoulders, at least sometimes.

@aras For me:
• Step away from ‘current events’ for most of the day.
• Life goes on: distract with mundane stuff: daytrips, friends, the household, work.
• Don’t feel too responsible. Not voting nazis, and sharing your opinions and support is a good base line. Anything on top (donating, protesting, contributing to open source 😉) is a net gain.
• Some escapism.

For you:
• Unity’s impact is lasting: free user friendly engines for everybody is a thing now.
• Thanks for running this masto instance.

Hey @aras 1st off: it saddens me to read that!! I really hope you find ways to deal with this shit feeling and you can get some relief out of these comments 🤞
2nd: not that I want anyone to feel that way but it's just a little .. helpful to see I'm not alone. Going through the worst phase of my life atm.
@aras Things that honestly helped me in the past:
• being face 2 face with lovely people
• therapists (doesn't have to be full blown therapy right away, at least talking to a pro that's outside of ones circles is SO good)
• meditation
• when being overwhelmed with shit: Try looking away from the shitberg for now, Pick ONE first thing that you can approach, that you can get under control right now. Can be laundry or making someone happy something small. Do it. Might already be better a bit then.
