#PSA / #FediTips

Just a reminder to people that when you see people posting their #Art, #Photography, #Writing / #Microfiction, or otherwise being a #ContentCreator on the #Fediverse, we can't see that you've looked at what we posted unless you interact with it. A post with no interactions could have been seen by no one, or a few thousand people, we don't know.

If you like what we are doing, and want to see more of that, be sure to click one of the buttons: #boost it, #follow them, #reply with something as simple as "I like this", or even just hit that #fave button, because the fave button is great for telling us that people looked at it and wanted to see more. We all Love that feedback!

The number one reason #ContentCreators leave the network is because they don't think people are looking at their posts, and #TheContentMustFlow, so simply acknowledging that you like their work is crucial to keeping them on the network.

You can help Fedi grow just by liking posts!

@Nuki What kind of monster could *resist* faving this pic?

(I understand the irony of this reply.)

@Nuki I like to hit that star/like/whatever-its-called when I don’t have anything specific to say, but just generally indicate that it somehow resonated with me. Could be “I like” or “I’m sorry” etc depending on the post.

But I generally don’t have much to say that time, and I can like a lot more than I can reply to (and I reply a *lot*).

I find it a good go to. It doesn’t flood anything and sends some good vibes.

Imho, ymmv :)

@Nuki are there any analytics tools you can use with Mastodon to see how many views you’re getting? Or is your reach a complete mystery here?
@g6meboi @Nuki mystery as far as I understand it. But I could be wrong.

@revoluciana @g6meboi
Sorry I didn't see that when it was posted. There are ways you can look at certain metrics, like, you can figure out what servers are getting it based on who is following you and who is following the people who boosted, and I'm sure you could go a step further with a link by tracking how many unique clicks there were on it. The server itself knows where it's sending the post, so I feel like maybe it could offer some slightly better tools for understanding that...

However, in terms of knowing exact metrics for people just looking at it, Fediverse software is built around not tracking users, and the decentralized nature would make it extremely difficult to accurately get those metrics even if they had them. People have put in feature requests, but what little they would be willing to do is not a priority.

@Nuki @revoluciana that’s wild! I’m a big fan of the philosophies underpinning Fediverse, but it seems unclear how to build an audience here

@g6meboi @Nuki

Fedi doesn't really work for influencers and "audience building" so to speak. People are really immune to it. Friction is built-in, especially because there is no algorithm.

So, instead of audience building, it's more like community participation and relationship building. Building an audience is not really a goal here. Real conversations and discussions and sharing of information are the goal. Authenticity is rewarded with authenticity.

People don't so much *build audiences*, they find mutuals.

At least, that's my experience and the experience of most of the people in my corner of Mastodon.

All that being said, while that friction encourages authentic interaction, it is also difficult to get started on here specifically because there is no algorithm showing you people and stuff you might find interesting in order to find mutuals who click for you, have similar interests, etc.

Two of the biggest things that can help:

- you're on .social, which is like a welcome lobby. Some people stay there and that's fine, but people often migrate to servers that have a lot of similar interests so that your local feed is filled with stuff and people you're more likely to click with. But you might not know the servers that would be best for you without getting a feel for the users.

- When I started some time ago, I vaguely remember that my tactic was to find a few people I liked, and then I just followed a ton of the people they followed, and started following and joining the conversation when I had something to add, and unfollowing when I decided that I wasn't interested in something someone was posting. Similarly, you can follow hashtags, and that's a help, too, to introduce people to your feed with similar interests.

In other words, if you want to build mutuals, it's more about finding others than it is about helping them find you.

But like, conversation and authenticity is pretty key, and bios with information about what you're about help people decide if they want to connect or not.

Oh, and one more bonus tip is to do an introduction post.

Hashtag the word introduction. Hashtag a bunch of stuff about yourself. Then pin that to your timeline. Makes a huge difference.

@revoluciana @Nuki thanx that’s super helpful!

@g6meboi @Nuki

You're welcome! Happy it helps!

@revoluciana @Nuki regarding the part about pinning a post to my timeline, the option to pin doesn’t appear where the Mastodon documentation said I would find it. Is pinning a feature you get after verifying?
@g6meboi @revoluciana @Nuki
Try updating your app!
If the issue remains the same, the you can reach out to @FediTips .
They will provide the necessary info, as soon as possible
#feditips #Mastodon #Fediverse

@squads @g6meboi @revoluciana @Nuki

The official Mastodon app doesn't let you pin posts yet, but you can do this by logging in on your server's website or by using a third party app.

By the way, you might want to switch to a third party app anyway as they tend to be much better than the official apps. On iPhone/iPad some good third party apps are Ice Cubes, Mona, Ivory for example.

If you want to use the website, in your case your server's website is https://mastodon.social

@FediTips @squads @g6meboi @revoluciana @Nuki
Personally, I prefer to just use the website on a browser. It's one less app to keep track of, looks the same on both the phone and the computer, and works seamlessly with whatever links you want to click.

@g6meboi @Nuki

Oh! I should mention, the official Mastodon app is trash. Or at least it used to be, but I'm pretty certain the things that used to be an issue still are.

I used Tusky on Android, but there are other good options. I can't remember what everyone else tends to use for iPhone.

The official app feels designed to centralize people's experience within a .social bubble. It used to just be an on ramp, and probably still is. I'd suggest getting a different app.

Help?

What #Mastoson apps are everyone using these days? I've been happily using #Tusky for years, but wanting some advice on both #android and #ios #iphone.

I'm not sure the best suggestions anymore or what's new or which have had substantial updates, etc. Am I missing out on anything on Tusky?

Also, while I'm at it, an added question, separate from the first, any recommendations for #crossposting with #bluesky?

#tech

@g6meboi @Nuki

@g6meboi @Nuki

Also, I'm vaguely recalling that the official #mastodon app either only has a local server view or opposite, only a federated view, but not both. (Can't remember which)

Is this still the case? Am I hallucinating?

@revoluciana I use @IceCubesApp on #iOS, and #Tusky on #Android.

As for cross-posting, I have heard good things about https://croissantapp.com (Paid) but have not used it myself.

Croissant | Buttery-Smooth Cross Posting

@revoluciana @g6meboi @Nuki Substantial updates, you say?

https://pachli.app/pachli/2024/09/08/one-year-on.html

And

https://pachli.app/pachli/2024/11/28/2.9.0-release.html

are good starting points for the sort of improvements you can expect.

One year on

It’s been a year since launching Pachli on Mastodon, so it’s a good opportunity to do a quick review of what’s been achieved so far, and what’s still to do.

Pachli

@pachli @g6meboi @Nuki

Thanks! I'll take a look at your app.

Edit: First glance, the filtering concept is kind of cool. That way if you're not in the right headspace, you can wait to reveal when ready, but you don't have to deal with a mute or block, plus, it filters ahead of being exposed to potential malice or whatever.

@revoluciana @pachli @g6meboi
Filtering is a native feature of Mastodon and many other interfaces. I don't use any apps, and I have it set up to not show me things like politics.

@Nuki @pachli @g6meboi

To be clear, this filtering is different than the filtering I'm familiar with using Tusky.

I can filter terms, for example, but that just means it won't show me those posts.

The way it is implemented in the above app is that it *filters* them so they show up in your notifications, but they are essentially obscured by a CW button. So, instead of scorched earth on a term or unknown server or whatever quality you're filtering, it's only softly obscured, so you can still decide in the moment whether you want to see it or not.

I hope that makes sense.

@revoluciana @pachli @g6meboi
You can do that with filters too. I have filters that do that set up on this account at least.
@Nuki @pachli @g6meboi that's awesome! Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize. Very much appreciated!

@Nuki @g6meboi

I think @revoluciana is talking about https://pachli.app/pachli/2024/11/28/2.9.0-release.html#anti-harassment-controls-for-notifications, which is different (and operates in conjunction with) any content filters you have set up.

Pachli 2.9.0 released

Pachli 2.9.0 is now available. This release adds additional anti-harrassment controls for notifications, improves accessibility, works around Pleroma bugs, and more.

@revoluciana @g6meboi @Nuki we can help with crossposting

@vocalcat @g6meboi @Nuki

I appreciate the reply, so I went to your site to check out the cross-posting tool you're building, but as soon as I saw that you're using and promoting AI as part of the tool, I immediately closed the page.

I'm just not going to use AI, and I'm doing my best to avoid software solutions that include it, even when it's not a required *feature*.

@revoluciana @vocalcat @Nuki we’re the type to be conscientious of tech’s role in our lives and the footprint its use puts on environmental and socioeconomic factors. Which is a common reflex on Mastodon. I noticed your website says you don’t place the same limits on Mastodon because you love it so much. What platform is hosting your AI features?
@revoluciana @vocalcat @g6meboi
....did I miss a message?

@Nuki @vocalcat @g6meboi

I'm not sure. Did you see vocalcat's reply about helping with cross posting? Their profile has a link and info about an app that they are building, and that's what g6meboi and I were responding to.

@revoluciana @vocalcat @g6meboi
okay now that you've told me and I've looked again, I managed to find it hidden in the feed. I didn't get a notification, nor could I see it in the thread, because Yiff.Life has mastodon.social limited by default.

@Nuki @vocalcat @g6meboi

No worries! And limiting .social is a healthy strategy. Such a minefield.

@revoluciana @g6meboi @Nuki thanks for the feedback! We believe in a responsible use of AI, but we understand and value the different opinions.

FWIW we do not allow automated AI generation content, we only use it to repurpose the content for different platforms maintaining as close as possible the author style. We believe in human beings as source of creativity, and should not be replaced by AI.
