Here are some tips to get started !
First if your mobile focused may I suggest downloading IceCubes on IOS or Moishidon on Android ! While the base Mastodon app is ok , it’s seriously lacking features!
Secondly think of things you’d like to see. Think of what a hashtag for that might be and follow it!
Can’t think of any hashtags? If you on one of the apps I suggested you can check out the federated feed at the top of your app screen. You will be shown everything posted on the Fediverse (not just Mastodon). See someone fun? Give them a follow !
See something funny or cute ? Boost it!
Use hashtags on your posts it will bring other people to your content !
And if you can please please use alt text with images it helps truly everyone see and enjoy what you post!
There are no ADs here, there is no AI, there is no algorithmic content forced on you! Mastodon exists solely for you to enjoy not so corporations can make money off you !

Three comments on the comments to this post:
1. I have a setting that reminds me to add alt-text if I've forgotten it. It is a thing.
2. I am happy to write alt-text if I see an image I want to boost that doesn't have it. Please don't let "I can't cope with alt-text today" stop you from posting your pictures! Even if they don't get likes, people see them and appreciate them.
3. If no-one is ever supposed to tell anyone how to use Mastodon, how will anyone ever learn things they can do to help people on Mastodon? Documentation and #FediTips and periodic "hey, this is a helpful thing you could be doing" can be informative without being prescriptive.
When someone boosts alt-text reminder posts like this one, I see them as a helpful reminder for me to write better alt-text, not a call to go out and harass other people about their lack of alt-text.

malteI'm curious how @_followback might help getting more interesting things into my feed by boosting the hashtags that I care about. I think you should all try and see for yourself too - just follow the account and then see what happens when you start posting with a hashtag.

If you want to make your Mastodon account as secure as possible, you can use "two factor authentication" also known as 2FA. 2FA means that even if someone finds out your password, they won't be able to access your account because logging in also requires entering a special ever-changing code. (This is similar to the system many banks use to protect online accounts.)
