The Enemy of #MotherEarth

"From Mother Earth to our bodies, in a #capitalist system everything that can be reduced to a commodity will be. As long as it can be sold, bought, or otherwise exploited, nothing is sacred. So long as the lands (and by extension our bodies) are viewed this way we will have conflict, as #capitalism is the enemy of Mother Earth and all that we hold to be #sacred.

"In its base definition, capitalism is an economic and political system based on an unregulated or 'free' market, private property, competition, and limited government intervention. But the definition obscures the reality that capitalism is based upon extreme social #exploitation and dispossession, #EcologicalDestruction, #hyperindividualism and #materialism, and its history is rooted in #WhiteSupremacy, #cishetereopatriarchy, #genocide, and #slavery.

"To be anti-capitalist is not enough, anti-capitalist propositions rooted in #industrialism and #extractivism are just as invested in #ecocidal (therefore anti-Indigenous) economies. Killing the Earth is killing Indigenous existence, #Colonizers must religiously convince themselves and others that the world is already dead to justify their ongoing violence against the Earth and existence. In the face of global ecological ruin, some attempt to further convince themselves that killing the Earth just a little bit less is an appropriate response."

The AIM Song of Anguish

"Though my family was skeptical of, and kept AIM at a distance, I grew up singing the AIM song. I've sung it at actions throughout the world, my grandma Roberta would always want to sing it, her barely audible voice at the drum belying her fierce power, I've sung it with both #RussellMeans (confronting the racist #ColumbusDay parade in Denver) and with #DennisBanks (too many times to recall) and faceless and nameless warriors on many frontlines. Though its provenance is not known, the story I recall that it was spiritual gift to rally AIM warrior during the liberation of #WoundedKnee.

"In analyzing #IndigenousPower and #DirectAction, it's vital to examine the context of strategies, tactics, and State repression that comprises the ongoing legality of #IndigenousResistance, particularly with the historically vital force of the American Indian Movement (AIM).

"Though there are many examples, #LeonardPeltier's false imprisonment for the alleged murder of two #FBI agents in 1975 and the clouded assassination of #AnnaMaePictouAquash are important markers.

"Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash, a strong #Mikmaq warrior with AIM, was found murderd in 1974 in Wanblee on the #PineRidge reservation in 'South Dakota'. Pictou-Aquash is also a symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women [#MMIW], Girls, Trans, and #TwoSpirit movement today.

"Accusations of her murder first pointed to the FBI and later, as AIM members revealed how paranoia of infiltrators had gripped the leadership intensely, rumors surfaced that AIM had her killed. This was a time when bad-jacking (making someone look like a snitch or informant even though they aren't) tactics by feds as part of #COINTELPRO was proving to be an effective tactic against revelutionary groups."

From Chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender - #IndgenousAnarchy, #InDefenseOfTheSacred:

"In 2003, after multiple grand jury hearings, AIM members #JohnGraham and #ArloLookingCloud were targeted and controversially named as the killers of #AnnaMaeAquash. Others such as Thelma Rios and Vine Richard (Dick) Marshall were also charged in association with her murder.

"A 2006 article by Billie Pierre, who was part of Native American Youth Movement (NYM) and a founding member of the radical Indigenous youth project Redwire Magazine, addressed the charges against Looking Cloud and Graham:

"'In the past few years, the member of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash -- an American Indian Movement (AIM) leader from the Mi'kmaq Nation in Nova Scotia, Canada -- has been reduced to that of a helpless woman who was murdered by her own allies. In reality, her murder is part of a ruthless campaign waged by the US government -- a campaign that, far from being ancient history, is still unfolding today. There is no credible evidence linking either man to the crime, and their prosecution seems like nothing more than an attempt to destroy what little remains of AIM... Graham says that the FBI started to visit him in the Yukon during the mid-1990s. On four separate visits, they offered him immunity and a new identity if he testified that any of the other former AIM leaders had ordered Pictou-Aquash's execution. He refused. On their last visit, they stated that this would be his final chance to cooperate; if he would not testify, they would charge him with murder.'"

[More from Billie Pierre's 2006 article] "Pierre also addressed how #COINTELPRO operated at the time:

"'This tactic of the FBI’s Counter-intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) undermined valuable members of a group by casting them in suspicious situations. Wherever Pictou-Aquash went, arrests would follow. She’d be released, while other AIM members were slapped with charges and high bail. In September 1975, FBI Agent David Price attempted to force her to sign an affidavit implicating Peltier for the murder of the two FBI agents. She refused to cooperate, and Price promised her that she wouldn’t live to see the year’s end. They quickly arranged for her to be buried as a Jane Doe. After this cover-up came to light, the FBI released a statement announcing that Pictou-Aquash was not a government informant. As intended, this statement insinuated that AIM might have believed Pictou-Aquash to be an informant and murdered her.'"

They let me go because they are sure I’ll lead them to Peltier. They’re watching me. I don’t hear them or see them, but I know they’re out there somewhere. I can feel it.' "

I had to put a CW on this excerpt. It should horrify all of us... There was no reason the FBI had to desecrate #AnnaMaeAquash 's body.

"The Vancouver chapter of the #NYM [#NativeYouthMovement] issued this statement regarding Graham and Looking Cloud case:

'If, as alleged, her killing was ordered by AIM’s leadership (under the pretext she was an informant), those ultimately responsible for her death are US government officials, including the FBI—for it was under their orders that a deadly counter-insurgency campaign was waged against AIM, which included portraying genuine movement members as informants. This strategy was used to create paranoia and division, to turn members against one another (just as the FBI had done against the #BlackPantherParty). Anna Mae was herself the target of an FBI “bad jacket.” FBI agents had threatened to kill her in the year prior to her death. When her body was found, despite being on an FBI wanted list, agents had her hands cut off for fingerprint analysis [!!!]. During the first autopsy, the government coroner determined the cause of death to be exposure, somehow missing the bullet hole in the back of her head.' "

From Chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender - #IndgenousAnarchy, #InDefenseOfTheSacred:

"Darlene 'Kamook' Nichols who had been married to #DennisBanks, received $42,000 from the #FBI to spy on #AIM and help build the case against #ArloLookingCloud and #JohnGraham [in the murder of #AnnaMaeAquash]. Kamook subsequently married the US Marshal who re-opened the case.

"The voluntary state-collaboration of John Trudell against Graham and Looking Cloud also became a flashpoint. John Graham’s extradition from so-called Canada would not have been possible without Trudell’s identification of him to the FBI.

"Though Looking Cloud confessed, he later recanted it stating that he was coerced with drugs given to him by State agents.

"In 2003 #LeonardPeltier issued this statement regarding the John Graham trial,

" 'When we talk of sovereignty, we must be willing to solve our own problems and not go running to the oppressor for relief…We have been and still are at odds with the most dangerous, well-funded, strongest military and political organization in the history of the world [the US government]. Whatever the result of any trials conducted in the courtrooms of our oppressor—the same ones’ ultimately responsible for Anna Mae’s death—we will continue to advance in our movement towards victory, inspired by her memory and her spirit.' So, the next section takes to task the glorification of #AIM leaders like #DennisBanks and #RussellMeans, and some of the #ToxicMasculinity within the group's ranks. I experienced this first hand with a coven-mate (who was a member of AIM) -- he and I would butt heads about a lot of things, and he truly had the attitude that he was always right and that he should be running the show. It got old after a while and I eventually left the groups (both my coven and our political group, the #ThomasMortonAlliance). Ego and emotional / physical abuse used to be a part of a lot of groups -- even Winona LaDuke was caught up in an incident that happened under her watch involving an abuse of power and sexual coercion. So yeah, I agree 100% with Klee's assessment of some of AIM's leadership and the "cult of personality" around certain figures.

"As Billie Pierre stated in her defense of Graham and Looking Cloud, 'A basic principle of any resistance movement is
non-collaboration with our enemy.'

"The context of extreme State repression and consequential internal paranoia and divisions within movements and how it
impacts ongoing struggles today is necessary to study. AIM and their Indigenous feminist counterpart Women of All Red Nations, have lessons unlearned that should be studied, challenged, and confronted outside of settler colonial state narratives that continue to undermine and attack Indigenous resistance. There are also serious reasons many young Indigenous People are wary of AIM, from the toxic misogynistic legacy that has remained unaccounted for, to the imposition of force in frontlines where they have tended to overbear local organizers. Though they’ve maintained leadership with their 'Grand Council' over scattered semi-autonomous chapters, AIM’s contemporary presence has depended on its legacy. It’s largely an institution that dwells on its past achievements. Though those achievements may be great, this doesn’t provide much opening for reflection and necessary transformation to be relevant to young folks who have grown up in what we might consider a 'post-Red Power, post-AIM' world. As AIM has aspired to be 'a catalyst for Indian Sovereignty,' the terms have only grown muddied with the actions of their celebrities. From Russell Means abusing a Diné elder, then attempting to dodge accountability by attacking Navajo Nation tribal sovereignty, to the trails of women used and abused by him, Dennis Banks, and the other personalities that still comprise AIM’s celebrity forces.

"This anguishing resentment of AIM and their ongoing impositions, is part of what motivated a young Indigenous person
to cut down the AIM flag that was flying over a sacred fire at the Winnemucca Community Resistance Camp in so-called
Nevada in 2021."

The last part of this section (The #AIM Song of Anguish) of chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book #NoSpiritualSurrender is something that I can relate to. After my negative experience with an AIM member, I formed an alliance with #RobertaBlackgoat and #CorbinHarney -- and told their stories (as well as providing #MutualAid). And yeah, not all resistance groups are created equal!

"AIM has been extraordinarily gloried but they weren’t the only radical #Indigenous organizations operating then; communities with forces such as #JanetMcCloud fighting for fishing rights in so-called Washington, Corbin Harney resisting #NuclearColonialism in so-called Nevada, grandmothers #KatherineSmith, #PaulineWhitesinger, and Roberta Blackgoat fighting coal mining and forced relocation on #BlackMesa, and so many more have fought for decades to protect sacred lands and waters. Occasionally AIM would be there alongside those struggles and sometimes they would not be welcome. In spite of this, the AIM song still echoes and invokes the spirit of resistance in #Tulalip, #WesternShoshone, and #Diné frontlines, and far beyond."

From Chapter 14 of #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender - #IndgenousAnarchy, #InDefenseOfTheSacred:

"Although the #NavajoTribalCouncil established a mass scale farming initiative called '#NavajoAgriculturalProductsIndustry (#NAPI),' the farm has stated on its website that it plants genetic #HybridCorn seed purchased from '#PioneerSeedCompany, #Syngenta Inc., and #Monsanto companies.' In 2014, in an attempt to 'curb' the diabetes epidemic, the #NavajoNationCouncil created a law that raised the sales tax for cheap junk foods sold on Navajo Nation and another removing sales tax from fresh fruits and vegetables. Economic pressure on those already struggling while not addressing the root causes and environmental degradation is par for the course for the #colonial government and Navajo politicians.

"Instead of directly feeding ourselves and communities, we have become dependent on businesses and corporations that are more concerned with profits than our health and well-being. The #BoardingSchools were replete with capitalist indoctrination to forcibly assimilate #Diné children into colonial society. The curriculum was designed with a clear lesson: To feed our families we needed jobs. To have jobs we needed to be trained. To be trained we needed to obey. To not have a job means you’re poor. To employ other workers is to build wealth. To build wealth means success."

From 2010: #Navajo Commercial Farm Using #GeneticallyModified Seeds, Despite Global Protests

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, June 16, 2010

"While #IndigenousPeoples protest #Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds around the world, the Navajo Nation’s commercial farm, #NavajoAgriculturalProductsIndustries, continues to use these seeds for commercial crops.

"Haitian farmers are now burning donated Monsanto seeds. In India, thousands of farmers committed suicide after switching from traditional seeds to genetically modified seeds. In Chiapas, Mayan farmers have refused to use the seeds which damaged heritage seed stock. Cross pollination from genetically modified seeds can endanger crops from ancient seed stock in the region.

"#Navajos have long planted century-old corn using traditional #DryFarming. Navajos relied on the stars to know when to plant and sometimes planted in spirals, according to Navajo elders in Rock Point, Arizona.

[...]

"However today the Navajo commercial farm boasts on its website that it plants genetic #HybridCorn seed purchased from '#PioneerSeed Company, #Syngenta Inc., and Monsanto companies." The commercial farm, NAPI, is located on the Navajo Nation near Farmington, N.M., and grows commercial food crops, including corn for potato chips, along with potatoes, wheat and other crops.

"Around the world, #Monsanto and genetically modified seeds have meant death for Indigenous Peoples and their crops."

[...]

"The area of northwest #NewMexico has been known as a 'US Sacrifice Area,' since the 1970s. It is the Navajo people who
have been sacrificed, by way of the US government working in collusion with #corporations and the elected Navajo Nation government.

"While #NAPI continues to use genetically modified seeds on its commercial farm, NAPI also has a #RaytheonMissile manufacturing plant located on the commercial farm where the crops are grown, a fact many would like kept secret. The fact that the Raytheon Missile factory is located on the Navajo farm was censored by Indian Country Today in 2006. At that time, Cuba was expressing interest in purchasing food products from NAPI and Indian Country Today editors demanded
that no research be done on Raytheon's missile plant at the farm or any possible pollutants discharged from Raytheon."

Navajo Commercial Farm Using Genetically Modified Seeds, Despite Global Protests

Censored News is a service to grassroots Indigenous Peoples engaged in resistance and upholding human rights.

From 2014: #Diné #FoodSovereignty : A Report on the #NavajoNation Food System and the Case to Rebuild
a Self Sufficient Food System for the Diné People

by the Diné Policy Institute, April 2014

#GMO / #GE on the Navajo Nation

"GMO/GE seeds are currently being used on the Navajo Nation by the #NavajoAgricultureProductsIndustry (#NAPI), located near the chapters of #Hogback, #UpperFruitland, and #Shiprock including #GMOCorn purchased from #Monsanto. As the region remains a major agricultural hub for many Diné farmers, the risk of #GMOContamination of Diné crops, particularly corn, is high. Furthermore, NAPI’s production of #alfalfa also utilizes GMO seed, which many Diné livestock owners purchase under the '#NavajoPride' brand, so GMO/GE feed is entering the Navajo Nation food system through NAPI products.

"In terms of Diné cultural perspectives, Diné knowledge holders, elders, and farmers have criticized the practice of GMO/GE by #biotech industries throughout Diné Policy Institute’s research and Food Sovereignty Initiative, stating that these practices are in direct violation of our teachings; of the Diné Fundamental Laws and our relationship and duty with plants and animals, particularly with our relationship with corn, our most sacred plant, and have stated that GMO/GE threatens the Diné way of life. As GMOs/GE pose such a large threat to Diné famers, Diné seeds, and Diné lifeways, and go against our most basic teachings, it is vital that the Navajo Nation and Diné people address both the presence of GMO/GE food and seeds on the Navajo Nation as well the potential future risks of GMO/GE to Diné Agriculture.

Ban on GMO/GE Seeds and #Pesticides on the Navajo Nation

The technologies and legalities of #GeneticModification and #GeneticEngineering are in direct contradiction to Diné Food Sovereignty. The #corporate ownership and control of seeds threaten the future of Diné agriculture; Diné people must control their seeds and agricultural practices in order to rebuild a self-sufficient food system that provides healthy foods for Diné people and also ensures the continuation of Diné agriculture and lifeways. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that Diné people, Farm Boards and Committees, Chapters, and the Navajo Nation move to ban GMO/GE seeds on the Navajo Nation. As GMO/GE seeds are already being used on the Navajo Nation by the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry (NAPI), this will require NAPI to change agricultural practices and policies, and end the purchase and production of GMO/GE crops. Recent State legislations have outlawed the banning of GMO/GE seeds in many counties; counties and states in the United States where people have the authority to ban GMO/GE seeds are becoming increasing rare. Therefore, the Navajo Nation and the Diné people have a unique opportunity to enact what many cannot through an assertion of Diné Sovereignty.

Native Seed Protections

"In addition to banning GMO/GE seeds, the Navajo Nation and Diné people should also consider enacting legal protections for our Diné seeds, to hold biotech corporations accountable for contamination of Diné seeds if this does occur. This is particularly urgent as legislation and court decisions at the state and federal level are making it increasingly difficult to hold biotech companies responsible for the contamination of heritage, heirloom, and non-GMO/GE seeds. One example of this is the '#MonsantoProtectionAct,' a piece of federal legislation.

#SeedBanks and #SeedLibraries

"Diné people can begin to protect Diné seeds and provide access to heritage, non GMO/GE seeds through the creation of community Seed Banks and Seed Libraries. Seed banks store seeds, while seed libraries allow people to take seeds to grow, provided that they give some seeds back from what they grow after harvest. Diné seed banks and libraries would also provide access to seeds for growers, addressing a concern of famers in the Community Food Assessment – that they didn’t have access to Native seeds. Seed Banks can include state of the art technology, such as that used by #NativeSeedSearch in Tucson, AZ. However, this is not necessary; Diné and other Native people historically stored seeds in clay jars, recent excavations of such seed preservation methods in the Midwest have produced seeds that were able to grow after 800 years. The seed bank in Tesuque Pueblo in New Mexico stores seeds in jars in a dark and cool in-ground cellar.

Education

"GMO/GE ingredients are in the majority of foods that Diné people are eating and GMO/GE seeds are on the Navajo Nation, however, most Diné people are unaware of the existence of these practices. Therefore public education and outreach on genetic modification and genetic engineering for both Diné people and Navajo Nation leadership is needed."

Safeguarding Sacred Corn

Valerie Taliman, Sep 12, 2018

"In Indian country, #NavajoAgriculturalProductsIndustries, an enterprise of the #NavajoNation, planted a 10-acre test [#GMO] crop four years ago, but ultimately discontinued it because of consumer demands.

"'We planted a test crop on about 10 acres just to see how it would do, but we found out our buyers did not want genetically modified products,' said Albert Etsitty, corn crop manager. 'Consumers were not educated about it and we let it go.'" [Yeah, who gives a shit about violating sacred Diné law, eh? Consume, consume, consume!]
