Sharks are an integral part of marine ecosystems being a top predator and without them systems can collapse. Unfortunately they have a bad reputation in some ways because they dare to be in the water where humans want to surf. Considering they have been in the water for 450 million years who are we to question their right to remain there? They are killed slowly by the people who cut their fins off for soup and traditional medicine, a very large market in China. The number of deaths registered to this horrific practice is thought to be between 73 and 100 million each year. This needs to stop and we need to change. New Zealanders are working to bring the kiwi back to the hills around Wellington. The Capital Kiwi Project has relocated 250 kiwis to the area, aiming to restore the bird’s presence after more than a century. On Tuesday, seven kiwi were released into the hills. Earlier, they made their first visit to New Zealand’s Parliament. The project is part of a broader effort to eliminate introduced predators by 2050. Thousands of traps protect the birds, and the Wellington colony has a 90% chick survival rate. Community involvement is crucial, with many residents actively participating in conservation efforts.
