If you feel disheartened by Adobe's news today 😔💔

I know change can be hard but
I would love to point you to a couple of great alternatives you will get used to in no time:

Replace Photoshop with -> @Krita 🖌️

Replace Illustrator with -> @inkscape 🖋️

Why? Because of this: https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/06/06/adobes-new-terms-of-service-unacceptably-gives-them-access-to-all-of-your-projects-for-free

Adobe's ToS changes could be an AI overreach on user data

A new and mandatory terms of service approval for Adobe Creative Cloud requires users agree to the company getting free access to users' projects, for whatever they want to do with it. That's unacceptable.

Follow-up tip:

If you are starting your transition from Adobe Illustrator to Inkscape, don't waste time trying to find features and controls all by yourself.

There are loads LOADS of amazing short video tutorials on Youtube for almost every Inkscape features you can think of. Youtube it all and you will be a pro in no time!

@Em0nM4stodon
(My opinion, your mileage may vary, take with a grain of salt)

It might be worth noting that #Inkscape still has work to be done, but it has come a very long way from where it was several years ago - lots of hard work making improvements, and that process is still continuing. I feel it’s similar to how I feel #Blender really “reached its stride” in the past couple years.

@DeltaWye @Em0nM4stodon hm okay thanks for that, bc last time I tried it or was so crash bug prone it was effectively unusable. But it was in fact several years ago, maybe 10 at this point.
@Em0nM4stodon
I think a future nice thing to have in every big open source program could be a Fediverse server to hang all the tutorials. Just in case something goes wrong with YT/Google.
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape I think Procreate is great on iPad, & Clip Studio Pro on computer for drawing purposes.
Very easy interface on Procreate, short learning curve.
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape DaVinci Resolve can replace Premiere, and there is a free version too.
@Em0nM4stodon @ XdanielArt put together this great list of Adobe alternatives. Some are free and some are not. I have not used them and can't vouch for the quality, but I'm sure each has reviews online.
@jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon Because it's in the top-left corner where people will see it first, ignore "Glimpse" as the GiMP fork. Not only is it no longer developed, the website has been taken over by a redirect to a malware site. Stick with the OG(iMP).

@jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon I can personally vouch for DaVinci resolve.

23 years of editing and is one of my favorite NLE programs to work with .

also it works on Linux not just Mac OS And Windows

@Warlockofwires @jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon I'll second that. Been video editing off and on for years and I've tried a whole bunch of different video editors and DaVinci is just perfect. I've just found it so intuitive and I've never looked at a single guide or manual. It's always a case of "I want to do this, well I imagine it'll be in this part of the program", and that's almost always correct.

@Warlockofwires @jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon

Big Davinci fan here too. Has been a huge part of our success in switching from stills to video.

@ewen @jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon I spend 17 years of my life on FCP. Did not want to learn FCPX.
And when I saw the path that adobe was going down last decade I decided to find a new program that would work on all three major operating systems so I wouldn't paint myself into a corner..

It took a few weeks of getting used to the new workflow versus Final Cut 7 .. but after that is was amazing.

@jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon The Lightroom section is missing Photomator as a suggestion. I've been using it for more than a year and am quite fond of it. #Photomator #Lightroom #PhotoEditing #Photography #AppRecommendation #EditingTools
@jamesmarshall @Em0nM4stodon interesting to see Krita not listed as an option for photo editing. It's at least as capable at the task as PSP or Paint.Net, which are both listed, even though it doesn't tout itself primarily as a photo editor.

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape

I myself am a huge fan of Blender, which can do a lot. I use it to make 3D animations (frequently cheese), liquid simulations (yeah, mostly cheese), some light VFX stuff (often cheese).. but it can do a lot more...

I also use GIMP (instead of photoshop), and kdenlive (for nonlinear video editing)

NOTE: blender has video editing capabilities too. There is also DaVinci Resolve, which is free but not Open Source

Anyway.. this is handy https://mastodon.online/@danielgibert/112563405605659894

@[email protected] You can always look at this chart that has been circulating for a long time, in various version, but I'll not dare to tell you what is the better solution for you particular needs, as there are multiplefactors. For us, Affinity/Resolve has been a blessing, others have developed a succesfull workflow on the open source route… and there is some people that could not left Adobe behind. Take the chart as a guide, experiment and ask for opinions on your case. https://9gag.com/gag/aXnMO52

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
there is also affinity software

@lelopes @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape

I love Affinity photo. There is differences from Photoshop, but I've been using it for a while now and I find it wonderful.

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape I haven't seen it listed yet but I've been using dark table as an alternative to light room for years and honestly it works really well for my flow and I wanted to give them a shout out.
@msBeeBop @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape is darktable easy to set up and manage for a non-technical user?
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape @artbotdavinci use davinci resolve vs premiere. A free base version or a ONE TIME FEE for the studio version ($300 ish or so) which you can also get for free is you buy some similarly priced products like the speed editor. #video
@Em0nM4stodon PDF Expert is a great substitute for Acrobat. It’s actually better in my book. It’s easier to use, but it might be Mac only.
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
I certainly would never use any sort of creative software (photo editing) that was based in the so-called cloud (on someone else's server) and not installed and working from my own computer.
@Em0nM4stodon to be honest Inkscape is not that stable on windows, i would recommend others Affinity Designer (paid)
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape I’ve got on my list installing DarkTable to replace Lightroom.

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
for continuous tone image manipulation I use #GIMP .

#floss #foss #gnu

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape putting this in the thread in case someone has good solutions - I work on album art kind of frequently, & use FOSS when possible, but generally access adobe stuff for final templating / CMYK print prep.
would love to avoid it if possible!

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
Replace Lightroom CC with → Nitro https://www.gentlemencoders.com/nitro-for-macos/
(Its developer was one of Aperture’s leads!)

Replace Photoshop with → Pixelmator Pro https://www.pixelmator.com/pro/ or Acorn https://flyingmeat.com/acorn/

Nitro® for macOS

@Em0nM4stodon For Mac users Pixelmator Pro is a good alternative to Photoshop. /cc @pixelmator

@Em0nM4stodon

I'm not working in the creative business but @GIMP works like a charm for me.

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape how about gimp for Photoshop?
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape I wonder what companies like Disney or others that do a lot of illustration and cartooning work (#copyright sensitive) think about this clause? " "non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free sublicensable, license, to use, reproduce, publicly display, distribute, modify, create derivative works based on, publicly perform, and translate the Content."
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape the Affinity apps are great.
@BenjaminRussell @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
I second this. Stand alone, affordable, not cloud based, they offer a realistic professional alternative to the main Adobe programs, iirc you can even set up the shortcuts the same. Add to that robust professional file format support too, and workflow consistent across the programs.

I really enjoy & appreciate the #Affinity suite. Polished, stable, capable. It’s the main reason I keep a Windows machine around. It might not yet have some hyper-advanced features that Adobe stuff does, but I haven’t felt I’m missing anything.

@toddz A few weeks ago I had said Affinity with Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher. However in the meantime they have been bought by Canva, so I am not very optimistic about the mid and far future, but as of now I still use their programs.
Switched from Adobe when they introduced Pandora‘s Box (Creative Cloud). But yes, Open Source is what I‘m goong for soon. Fed up with Corps.

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape

@toddz @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape

I still use Adobe CS2 from 20 years ago and it does all I need it to.

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape Some advice as well for Photoshop peeps (might be controversial)

Gimp is not a 1-to-1 replacement for Photoshop, but it really gets the job done on common, less intensive flows. Many of the options Photoshop has, Gimp has decent alternatives for. I'd say give it a shot!

@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape paint.NET and XnView for photos
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape on Windows, Paint.NET is a superb tool. I've been using it for years. Also GIMP which is a bit more complicated to use but very powerful and is available for basically all OS.
@Em0nM4stodon For #photography I recommend:
#digikam for photo management
#darktable and #rawtherapee for RAW development
#gimp with #gmic for advanced photo editing/manipulation
And if you need the fancy new image generation features, you can use open models like stable diffusion with interfaces like #automatic1111 for e.g. inpainting (if you have a modern graphics card)
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape The Affinity apps by Serif (I think they’re at least partially under Canva now) are great Adobe alternatives! No subscriptions and great software quality and cross-platform support along with integrations between the apps. apps for iPad, Mac, and Windows.
@Em0nM4stodon I just canceled my Acrobat Pro account and deleted all of my entire document cloud files. Many of those were copyrighted PDFs that I've purchased over the years, and they're all available for download where I purchased them, and I have a local backup.
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape not sure, if it's replacement in real sense, as its online tool, but Ido like #photopea
@The_ERROR
I have #PhotoPea installed as a PWA on my Windows laptop, and it works fantastically.
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
@Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape
Thank you for the Krita link!
Would you know of an alternative to a PDF editor - there are plenty - but one that can do the same as Adobe Acrobat X Pro: add Watermark and also digitally sign a pdf document? W/o using a cloud based app.
@captain @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape I could also use a recommendation for a good PDF editor. I need to use one occasionally in my professional life as a biz editor, and for many years (like 15) I’ve been making do with the standalone Adobe 9 Pro.
@PamelaBarroway @captain @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape What I would love to find is a PDF editor that will allow you to redact portions of a multiple-page file as easily as Acrobat does.
@jmccyoung @captain @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape Absolutely — great point! Anyone know of such a PDF editor?
@jmccyoung @PamelaBarroway @captain @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape After decades of reliance on Acrobat, I cancelled my small business account on Friday. I do not yet have a replacement. A peer recommended Nitro.
@Onlineadviser @PamelaBarroway @captain @Em0nM4stodon @Krita @inkscape Thank you for the tip! It doesn't look like redaction is one of its features but it's still an attractive option. What I've done for short files is to convert to an image file format using the GIMP or the like and then draw a box around what I want redacted and fill it. It's not too bad for a page or three but more? It's a nuisance.
@Em0nM4stodon I've been using Krita and Inkscape for over 10 years. I only installed test versions of Adobe products and wasn't happy at all with the interface. One small exception I use it for CMYK prints, loading finished artworks into a free CS 2 Photoshop version. But that's it :D. All creativity can flourish thanks to open-source software. 💚

@Em0nM4stodon

I'm using Krita for over a decade but would not recommend it as a replacement for Photoshop unless Photoshop was only used for painting before. Krita doesn't have many of the photo editing capabilities that PS has but is of course excellent for painting.

#krita

@Em0nM4stodon if you’re on Mac, Pixelmator Pro is worth a look as an alt to PS
