@glyph @ehashman I wonder if the idea is to realign them with a future quote post feature?
"boost" is a reasonable description if someone is just increasing exposure of a post as is. If you want a word that also covers cases where you add context, maybe it isn't so appropriate.
Still, "reblog" sounds weird if nothing else in the UI is called a "blog".
@jamesh @glyph @ehashman Exactly. I've long thought that each way of reacting to a post should have its own short verb.

Quotes, boosts, + replies are all peers. None should be secondary to the others.
Or is that not German enough?
@[email protected] Bingo. All five fundamental reactions to posts are now peers: - reply - boost - quote - favorite - bookmark Five verbs with simple names + icons. Nailed it!
@glyph Toots always sounded juvenile to me and I just called them posts.
There was nothing wrong with boosts.
@glyph I don't mind the retreat from toots - but I don't like adopting "reblog".
Toots can live on as community terminology. If enough people take up its use, maybe it can even rise to prominence.
But on the other hand, Reblog ... already belongs to a different community. And should be left alone.
IMHO.
Exactly. But the developers refer to Mastodon as a microblogging service so they think everyone else uses these terms. They're wrong, but... (shrugs)
@FediThing remicroblog 👀
@badrihippo @glyph well if one wants to be pedantic, Mastodon is a federated microblogging platform, so they are microblogs. But remicroblogging doesn't exactly roll of the tongue.
(But do bring toot back please.)
I told Eugen that boost was better than reblog, because most people don't know the term microblogging. He replied that boost was worse because people associated boost with stealing cars (???).
This is exactly why Rockstar has been slowly backing off the whole "car stealing" branding of GTA and focusing on other aspects of the game, they are just losing money hand over fist because consumers just hate the idea of stealing cars and are upset to even be associated with it.
@Alonealastalovedalongthe @glyph
But, that's still not what most people think about when they hear the word "boost"?
Yeah I think video games are pervasive enough now that for most people "boost" conjures up images of mario kart tracks and the glowy boost pads on the ground that make you go fast.
I feel like if around where I live you did throw "boost" around in the context of cars people mighttt understand but it isn't a common phrasing at all.
yes, sorry I should have put a /s
@Alonealastalovedalongthe @glyph @Ember
Sorry, my own fault for taking it a bit too seriously 😁
Thank you for your apology, the problem is that I am not very funny so I don't want people to miss my sarcasm and then be wasting precious joke-potential, so really it is on me if I make a joke that somebody misinterprets as serious.
Also, /s I am *hilarious*......
