Living in Perth, Western Australia.

I've definitely noticed this when travelling. When you're living in an area where people don't die from the cold, there isn't as much incentive to make houses efficient to heat.

So I'm more likely to rug up in the winter and leave the house cold. In places where this is not an option, they tend to heat houses to a comfortable temperature.

Australian winters shouldn't feel this unbelievably cold

Tourists are stunned to discover they were warmer back in a country that's blanketed by snow for months of the year.

The local bar has had some nice Estonian beers on tap recently from a brewery called Pohjala. They've all been great, but are quite strong.

This week they had a coffee/coconut stout that was 12.5%.

It only took two and a half months, but I've finally gained access to the Perth Linux Users Group ABN. We had run into this problem when a long time committee member who had handled this side of things died late last year.

We realised that no one knew who else had access, so had to resort to printing out and posting paper forms to the ATO requesting that they update our records. It took three attempts before I had the correct documentation for them to accept the forms. What eventually worked was minutes from a committee meeting that included a motion appointing me as a "public officer". AGM minutes showing that I had been elected to the committee were not sufficient.

I guess the main lesson here is that if you're running a club or association, make sure you know who is listed as an associate and that there are multiple active members on that list. While you can recover via the paper forms, it's going to be far quicker for an existing associate to update the records.

"Greta Thunberg kidnapped by the Israeli military" was not on my 2025 bingo card.

The Premier is floating the idea of changing when WA holds it's public holidays: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06-09/wa-public-holidays-may-change-to-match-east-coast-premier-says/105393914

Given that they already decided to celebrate WA Day in November despite the public holiday being in May, this doesn't seem too surprising. My guess at what the changes are is:

* Move WA Day from start of June to November.
* Move King's Birthday from September to June to match the eastern states.
* Possibly create a new holiday in the September slot to coincide with the Royal Show.

WA's public holidays may be changed, Premier Roger Cook says as King's Birthday marked

Western Australians could see a realignment of public holidays to coincide with the east coast and have an additional public holiday added to the calendar as soon as next year, WA Premier Roger Cook says.

It's kind of amusing that the local post office has an "Open 24/7" sign next to it's post office boxes when it is located within an arcade that is closed on the weekends and after hours on week days.

So who gets the Queensland LNP as part of the divorce?

I guess I have something to declare to customs on the way home. They had these made for all the staff who've been here for 20+ years.

The diet Pepsi here in Frankfurt says "Zero Zucker" on it.

So I'm now just realising that Mark Zuckerberg's surname is German for "pile of sugar".

Having a nice beer in the park before the sprint.
