It seems silly but mastodon’s retreat from the language of “toots” and now even “boosts” ( they’re “reblogs” in the official app now ) is exactly the same dumb-as-rocks discarding of a recognizable brand that Xitter is doing

@glyph

I told Eugen that boost was better than reblog, because most people don't know the term microblogging. He replied that boost was worse because people associated boost with stealing cars (???).

@FediThing @glyph

This is exactly why Rockstar has been slowly backing off the whole "car stealing" branding of GTA and focusing on other aspects of the game, they are just losing money hand over fist because consumers just hate the idea of stealing cars and are upset to even be associated with it.

@Alonealastalovedalongthe @glyph

But, that's still not what most people think about when they hear the word "boost"?

@FediThing @glyph

Yeah I think video games are pervasive enough now that for most people "boost" conjures up images of mario kart tracks and the glowy boost pads on the ground that make you go fast.

I feel like if around where I live you did throw "boost" around in the context of cars people mighttt understand but it isn't a common phrasing at all.

@Alonealastalovedalongthe @FediThing @glyph they're not losing money 'hand over fist' on one of the most successful games of all time lmao
@Ember @Alonealastalovedalongthe @FediThing (I am pretty sure that was a sarcastic joke)

@glyph @Ember @FediThing

yes, sorry I should have put a /s

@Alonealastalovedalongthe @glyph @Ember

Sorry, my own fault for taking it a bit too seriously 😁

@FediThing @glyph @Ember

Thank you for your apology, the problem is that I am not very funny so I don't want people to miss my sarcasm and then be wasting precious joke-potential, so really it is on me if I make a joke that somebody misinterprets as serious.

Also, /s I am *hilarious*......

@FediThing @glyph I use “Share” with Owncast. “X shared Y with Z”. It’s always felt like a pretty clear way to describe it.
