Whoopsie! Did I send the wrong command again..
@stux LOL, I think I hear those sirens outside my house!!!
@stux "every year these magnificent creatures gather in their natural mating grounds, their horn-like mating call audible over great distances”
@stux In online games, we are sensitive to flash mobs overloading a given zone and slowing down a server. We build a fail safe that prevents more than a certain density of objects. (One way to do that is to teleport a random object out of the zone, when things get bad enough). I’d imagine there’s a central dispatcher that could tell the density exceeded a reasonable level and should have just started saying “do not enter”.

@obviousdwest @stux Oh, that gives me flashbacks to a game I dev'd for a couple of decades ago...

We didn't have proper locks on the database, and we had parties that the players could set up, where a sizeable fraction of the players would show up and start swapping stuff.

Items missing between the cracks, items duplicated (including unique items)... it was "fun". $fun. fun < epsilon. Y'know... *that* sort of fun.

@stux I’m fascinated by emergent phenomena in multi-agent systems (#AI, Human, combo). This looks like a great example.
- Is this a type of flocking behavior?
- Did some other #autonomous vehicle/company deceive these autos to come to this place?
- Is the result of a routing #algorithm succumbing to natural traffic bottlenecks?

On the practical side, how does anyone undo this situation?

@stux Link to autonomous car traffic jam in Austin. See also the video @stux posted above

Over a Dozen Robotaxis Cause Massive Traffic Jam in Austin

Robots do not fail because they don't get tired, they don't drink and drive, they are not moody, they don't ask for a raise. Rewind that. ...

@meltedcheese
Kill it with fire!
I am seriously impressed by those peoples' self control. It wouldn't take more than a dozen people to flip one of those menaces on to its back and out of the road
@stux
@BrentInMasto @meltedcheese @stux
Have you ever experienced Austin traffic? It's right up there with Chicago. The volume and shit design of the roads, there are pretty consistent traffic jams.
The robo cars are still generally better drivers than the Austinites.
@Netux
I haven't been in Austin since 1993 but I know Chicago traffic so this makes sense to me now
@meltedcheese @stux
@meltedcheese @stux There should be an automated call to a remote operator if they're stuck in a situation they can't handle.
@mogul @stux How does an autonomous car tell if it is in a situation it can’t handle?

@meltedcheese @stux
I dunno, I'm not paid VC money to figure it out for them. But as a freebie...

Stuck in the middle of an intersection not moving for 10 minutes? "Report problem" button accessible to the passengers? Data analytics that alerts when one of the cars can't move because another of their cars is in the way, and looks for cycles?

@stux What people see when you're on Street View xd
@GayCookie  Perhaps this is the new "Live StreepView Maps 0.1"
@stux It's a parody horror movie: Night of the Robot Cars!!!
@stux the future is so much dumber than I was promised as a kid
@dominicvfx
Maybe they are actually smart and protest climate change by blocking the roads, without the risk of going to jail? 😉
@stux @jknodlseder
@stux They forgot to include Cruise Control.
@stux The future is here, and it is so stupid.
@ColesStreetPothole @stux that appears to be the traffic jam that occurred in West Campus in Austin a week ago or so.

@stux

Do those things have back-of-headrest displays showing ads at the passengers?

@stux was the big cheer partway through someone finally flipping one over onto the sidewalk and off the road?
@stux This looks so much like Cities Skylines 🫣

Only that they don't despawn after a while
UNILAD

A street in Austin was brought to a standstill and drivers weren't able to get out of the conundrum.

@stux
At least they did not gather at null island.

@stux "In retrospect, we shouldn't have named the new intersection 127.0.0.1".

@stux from around the world we could thank US politicians for confirming how irresponsible and uh... not very smart is to allow tech bro companies to deploy mediocre technological "solutions" like those robotaxies.

People literally die because someone in a power position believed the BS from those techno snake oil salesmen.

@stux it actually is funny to imagine how we're just giving anyone determined enough a way to ddos roads lmao

@stux should any one company have this sort of control over public roads?

Imagine what this would look like on a highway.

Or a remote support engineer decides to go rogue to control a fleet.

Who would pay for these mistakes? Of course, it will be us.

@stux those poor wankpanzer inhabitants 🥲
@stux They seem to store a Cruise car in my #SanFrancisco neighborhood, the Excelsior, by having it drive empty around and around and around. This helps traffic and the environment exactly how?
@stux Look like a scene from the film adaptation of Attack Surface.
@stux I can't understand why there isn't an automated distress call to a remote operator to unfuck them when this kind of tangle happens.
@stux is this an american climate protest, or normal trafic? I don't speak car. :/
@stux don't let CGPgrey see this.
@stux @psy instead of building mass public transit, men built this 🤪
@stux so THAT spot is meant, when moving cars to /dev/null
@stux do those move for fire trucks, ambulances, police? Or will this be implemented with next sprint?

@stux I'm so glad this shit is illegal in #Germany, cuz if cops weren't towing them for "needlessly driving within city limits" (which is a crime due to envoirmental damages caused by it) people would propably steal thease #deadheading shitboxes for parts and set then on fire for lulz...

Not that I want to see the two latter things to happen!
Arsonry is bad!!

@stux self-driving cars will ease congestion 🤡
@stux calls to unionisation heeded, robots now on strike
Wenn die Autolobby #LetzteGeneration macht, dann aber richtig
@stux Skynet having fun.
@stux @yosh this is definitely the future we deserve. 😅
Sure, there are not enough idiots on the streets yet, we urgently need Artificial Idiots.

@stux
Don't worry, when I used to play #simutrans , this would happen all the time.

Granted ... pixels on a screen versus rubber on the road ...
