Small biz IT support/consulting in Chicago's NW burbs; software dev before that; BA-CS before that. Tries to make tech understandable and not overwhelming for clients. Desperately in need of a haircut. Known associate of felines. Probably ascended once in Nethack many years ago.
Peter G. Neumann, renowned computer scientist, ARPANET/Internet pioneer and expert on technology risks, working at SRI International since 1971, has died at age 93. Peace. He has been my friend and colleague for over half a century. He will be greatly missed.
#wtf had last night's Late Show clips playing while making coffee and got a #youtube ad that was an AI slop "my husband can't get it up so while he's not home I boink the neighbor that's taking this herbal supplement" ad. JHFC is Google intentionally injecting this rancid crap into their ad stream to make people buy subscriptions?
Holy crap. 'Canada separatist' channels that are really just techbro-generated ragebait with hired actors looking for ad revenue. https://youtu.be/NXafC7tlqt0 #canada #alberta #separatism

In the US, the ATF is proposing that on any Federal firearm-related forms "Sex" will mean "biological gender." (Comments are open, for what it's worth: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/05/06/2026-08932/selecting-biological-sex-on-atf-forms, relevant: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2026-05-08/pdf/2026-09183.pdf).

This seems remarkably short-sighted. By focusing on genetics instead of how people present it's actually *less* useful in terms of identifying people - and given the political stances of those in the administration it's not like private-party firearm sales are involving a lot of paperwork anyway. All this along with simplifying the form to apparently ask for less information, and in the context of forms that will only be filled out by the same people who actually follow the law instead of the "gun show loophole" folks.

@jaykuo Wait. When did the NYT start hard-balling questions? Did they drop a nut recently?
"The long-term consequences of this war were not fully considered. The disruption this will cause to energy markets and other macroeconomic measures will be significant. The unpredictable nature of the current administration makes business modeling near impossible."
"Uncertainty is problematic in the oil and gas business, and this administration is the definition of uncertainty. I expect to see material demand destruction come over the longer term as many societies will come to see hydrocarbons as no longer a certainty"
Pitch perf.
@bsides312 did you know that your visible profile on Mastodon/Fediverse omits little things like your website (except social media accounts from Meta, etc) and the actual date of the conference?
