It's release day! #Mastodon 4.2 will drop later today. I'm very excited for all the improvements we've been working on since January to become available to all server operators and their users.

@Gargron I do hope that one of the improvements is that when one adds an image, the alt-text box automatically and immediately opens with the cursor in the box, ready to enter the alt text. This will finesse three problems:

1. not knowing about alt text
2. knowing about alt text but not knowing how to enter it
3. knowing how to enter it but forgetting in the moment

Making it the natural default removes the structural bias against entering it.

@Leisureguy @Gargron Great Idea! Iβ€˜m a constant number three

@Hartkern @Gargron

The problem is that the current design is biased against alt-text entry in that it puts barriers in the way. By having the cursor placed in the alt-text entry box as soon as the image is posted, the new default is neutral: the user can choose to enter alt-text or not. With the old implementation, often the choice is not made because the interface hides the opportunity for the choice.

@Leisureguy @Gargron That sound like a client problem. What they just releases is the server edition I believe.

@droidboy @Gargron

I useMastodon using my browser. I assumed that the basic structure of the web interface came from Gargron, with the individual instance able to customize it to some degree (e.g., maximum post length). That, I assumed, was why the overall web interface was much the same from instance to instance.

My suggestion was aimed at the web interface template that the instances receive.

Perhaps my mental picture of this is wrong.

@droidboy

If I'm reading this article correctly, the user interface is indeed under Gagron's control. Am I missing something?

@Leisureguy @droidboy

No, you are correct. The #Mastodon project provides the source code for both the backend server and the web interface.

Instances can modify these however yhey chose.

@droidboy @Gargron

Droid Boy, take a look at this article in Verge:

https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/21/23884312/mastodon-search-onboarding-cross-server-interactions-4-2

The article makes clear that Mastodon's user interface in a browser is indeed a part of the Mastodon implementation.

And I believe that interface should make alt text entry the default instead of discouraging it (as described in my earlier post).

Mastodon 4.2 improves search, onboarding, and cross-site interactions

Mastodon 4.2 has a bunch of changes, including improvements to server code and the web interface that file down some of the platform’s weirder rough edges.

@Leisureguy @Gargron I would love a feature like this!

I don't expect it will be in this mastodon release but I hope it gets implemented at some point in the future.

@Gargron

I'm apparently going to need to add ElasticSearch to get the most anticipated new feature, right?

cc @mastohost

@wjmaggos Yes, if you want to perform full text search on your server. But even without ElasticSearch users can opt in to have their posts index in search but it will simply not work locally.
@mastohost Looks like I’ll be adding ElasticSearch to my personal instance then. Would you also recommend increasing from β€˜Moon’?
@karim Well, ElasticSearch runs on independent resources, so it will make no difference for ElasticSearch if you are using Moon or another plan.
@Gargron πŸŽ† Can't wait to try it.
@Gargron
Great to read.
For everyone who is technically interested in what is new or has been fixed.

@stoamandl @Gargron

I sure hope you have fixed the curtains of "speed limit" notifications I've been getting on 2 different servers AND an app!

@stux fixed it on Masto.ai - BLESS HIM!

Really annoying when you have been AFK for hours and the curtain of "Speed limit" notifications starts up in the left-hand column even if you haven't touched your keboard other than to enter the password for the computer.

@Gargron Huge congrats on this major upgrade!
@Gargron newb rube question for anyone who cares to answer a newb rube: if i access mastodon primarily through a mobile app, what if anything do i need to do to see/get the upgrade?
@cultdev Nothing, it's up to your server to do the upgrade. Since you're on mastodon.social I'm sure you'll get it straight away!
@cultdev There are some things you won't see because they're visual changes to the web interface; but things like search and higher quality images will be available through apps without any upgrades.
@Gargron the man himself! thank you kindly
@Gargron @cultdev When the admin of your instance updates you server, right?
@droidboy @Gargron @cultdev Exactly. Depending on how busy they are and how complex their setup is, it can take a while.

@Gargron congratulations!

Is there anything on-the-wire that needs to be documented for other ActivityPub implementers?

ActivityPub - Mastodon documentation

A decentralized social networking protocol based upon the ActivityStreams 2.0 data format and JSON-LD.

@Gargron I’m glad it’s still in my pocket.
@Gargron I'm excited with #Mastodon 4.2 as much as I'm excited with #Godot #GodotEngine 4.2 🀣
@Gargron far out thanks! Also love seeing the
@Gargron congrats on all the excellent improvements!
@Gargron Please say you added support for quote toots.
@Gargron 3 releases (excluding <4.1 releases) in 3 days.
Will 4.2.1 drop tomorrow?
@Gargron Add the ability to quote posts
@Gargron kenapa hari ini server climatejustice.rocks tidak bisa diakses ya?
@Gargron oh sekarang sudah bisa diakses terimakasih
@Gargron Is ElasticSearch going to be required from this version or is search still an optional feature for instances?
@Marcus I'm running RC2 and Elastic is still optional.
@jan Perfect! That means I can do the upgrade today and worry about getting search configured when I have more time to focus on it πŸ˜ƒ

@Gargron Hello Eugen & team; congratulations on this v4.2 Stable milestone. πŸŽ‰

Rather than users needing to petition individual Instance Admins & Mods for this, would it be possible pls for you to add these into the default Masto s/w config, so that it automatically becomes available fediverse-wide? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Expand the #emojis available in the compose-toots emoji-picker tool, by adding these commonplace #FOSS #Linux ones [which are available in at least some #Instances ]:

:openSUSE:

:vivaldi_snapshot:

Note that my current Instance already has  , but IMO that should also be added to the preceding fediverse-wide list to cover individual Instances not already having it.

Thank you 🀞

@MsDropbear84 @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods I believe the better option would be "shared, but moderated" `emojo relay` - similar to twitch's ecosytem having a common shared location people can upload emotes... then admins could just subscribe to those lists

BetterTTV

@aussocialadmin @MsDropbear84 @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods Admins already can import emojis from other instances.

I use Linux myself, but I run an instance that's not aimed at nerds, so adding in all this Linux-related stuff wouldn't mean anything to them and just clutter the Emoji UI.

@MsDropbear84 @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods Added most of them for you

@aussocialadmin @Gargron @shlee @AusSocialMods Oh how nice, thanks very much πŸ€— πŸ’œ

Iirc now, it's possible that i might have slightly erred with at least some of those you couldn't do, eg, maybe these variants instead?

:vivaldi_snapshot: = :vivaldi_gray: ?
:openSUSE: = β€‹ ?

That's how those three are in tech.lgbt, fwiw.

EDIT: Oh wow, lookee at that. Now that re-spelled oS one works; cool !

@MsDropbear84 @aussocialadmin @Gargron @AusSocialMods I'll grab KDE/vivadli.. it might be case sensitive. for suse
@Gargron Great! Can you please take a look at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/20107 ? It's been a while.
