Just posted this on the bird site - what is the last straw people need to leave twitter completely? I found my limit. I'm leaving.

For me, paying nazi, misogynistic 'influencers' is too far. I've long been passive on Twitter, but used it to distribute content. I can't do it anymore. The values conflict is too much.

I'd love it if some academics took a stand with me. I'm going to delete my (50K+) follower account on the 13th of August. I'm staying for a month to do a count down and encourage others to #DeleteTwitter.

I don't have a recommendation of where is best to go. Anywhere is better than Twitter and its ocean of hate. Appreciate a boost to build a bit of momentum for this protest attempt

@thesiswhisperer wondering what took so long...
@Durff Better late than never, I guess – cheers @thesiswhisperer, hope you manage to convince a few people.

@Durff @thesiswhisperer

Not me. I want people to feel welcome, and have the first thing they hear when they join Mastodon is "Welcome to the party".

@jztusk @Durff @thesiswhisperer

Musk (and Huffman) have been the best marketing for Mastodon. It was really kind of them to donate the campaign. Maybe sometime we should get a pool together and send him some flowers as a thank you.

@thesiswhisperer I am rapidly reaching the same conclusion - my engagement has been declining but I still value interactions with unmigrated colleagues.
@thesiswhisperer for me it was when he gutted protections for trans and nonbinary people against deadnaming and misgendering. I was not going to use a platform that didn't protect its users.

@athena_rose922 @thesiswhisperer Yep, same here. I shuttered my account back in April, and I'll probably delete it entirely quite soon. Only reason I'm keeping it currently is to offer a couple of people there (who aren't anywhere else I visit) Bluesky invites when I get them.

Although Bluesky is also having something of a moderation crisis currently, so...yeah.

@thesiswhisperer
Be the change you want to see in the world.
@thesiswhisperer I've locked my account and logged out on all devices, I did that when Elon sacked everyone. But haven't been able to bring myself to delete my account. Yet .
@IanSudbery @thesiswhisperer There’s an argument to be made for not deleting your account, because it ensures that nobody can claim your old username once it becomes vacant. Locking, logging out and never coming back to an abandoned account is a good way to go.

@IanSudbery @thesiswhisperer Elon just launched X.Ai which is going to launch it's own ChatGPT-like product. He's going to feed all the Twitter data he has into that to train it. Then he'll use his new generative AI machine any way he wants.

I fried my birdsite account last November, that's the only way to keep your data out of his hands.

@thesiswhisperer I like it here but I miss the many people I connected with on the bird site who seem able to hold their nose and continue posting there. I understand it's a steep learning curve for folks but I am hopeful that, in time, we can reconnect here.

#MastodonMatters

@sflkirk @thesiswhisperer yes, this is me too. I hesitate to let it go altogether because I still have good convos in my wee corner there. Sigh, it's a great loss. Here is a nice vibe tho

@sflkirk learning curve?

They want to stay there at this point.

@jason yes, fair enough. Although some of the ones I have communicated with have expressed confusion regarding getting to grips with Mastodon. I personally could not stomach remaining on the bird site.

@sflkirk I can understand maybe missing algorithmic timelines and suggestions. I don’t _condone_ missing those things, as I think they are anti features that make these places worse, but I get it. Finding whom to follow on here can be hard.

But I started on Twitter in like 2007 and always used a third-party client, so those problems existed on Twitter as far as I was concerned.

Once that’s set up, it’s really… just fine here? My main complaint is people I miss who haven’t jumped.

@thesiswhisperer I salute you on this and very much understand why you're doing it. I'm reluctant to join you in outright vacating Twitter, a) because I'm also an indie musician just starting to get word out about new music, and some people at least are still here, and b) I hear the justice argument from those who, as it were, *can't* leave Twitter and don't want other progressives to abandon them. But b) was an argument the last two waves; maybe that's changed.
@thesiswhisperer @timhollo After I saw this news today I didn’t bother with a countdown, I just went straight in and deleted both my accounts. No hesitation.
@Stewart @timhollo my only reason for count down is to make a big, hair flouncing exit. I have a lot of followers - I want them to see me leave and think about why they stay
@thesiswhisperer @Stewart yeah, I’ve been popping in occasionally and being baffled by so many good people still there. It’s pretty shocking
@thesiswhisperer For you of course peeps will follow you everywhere including here
@[email protected] link to your account in the fedi and leave
@thesiswhisperer I'm not going to delete my account, since that recovers my username to be used by pornbots and Nazi trolls. I will refuse to post and just leave the account open and quiet, like the rest of the alt-right ghost town Moosk is building.
@Wikisteff @thesiswhisperer That’s me exactly. My boundary is that I will not give one word of mine to the words exchanged on Twitter. I’ve been that way since Musk.
@thesiswhisperer I am keeping my account alive so the username doesn't get squatted. Made it private and I log in once a month (incognito window) to tweet out about Musk being a bellend. No apps installed, no other interactions. I don't want anybody else having coldclimate
@coldclimate @thesiswhisperer Doing the same. This is the way.
@Wildbill @coldclimate thanks - I don't want anyone else to be thesis whisperer either 🤔

@thesiswhisperer I moved to Mastodon im November and deleted my account on Twitter a few months later. Once you started following a decent number of interesting people here, it becomes so much better than Twitter (I used it for 13 years).

Regarding the audience, which is relevant for many people in science, when #Threads become part of the #fediverse this problem will be solved.

@serklarvel @thesiswhisperer Agreed. I never liked Twitter much; now, I use mastodon daily.

@serklarvel

I suspect that #Threads will give preferential treatment to content on Threads

@thesiswhisperer

@thesiswhisperer I only check Twitter for my local weather person. I moved to a Mastodon instance a while ago.

The Mastodon mobile app is fantastic and the platform itself works great for my needs.

@thesiswhisperer
Congratulations for leaving the Twitter hatesite.

It is not safe, and eventually everyone sane will leave. Thank you for helping lead others away.
#TwitterMigration

@thesiswhisperer I backed off when I was slightly, and I do mean slightly, rude to a hate account once and was suspended until I would delete my post. The day Elon Musk took over I left entirely and never looked back. I don't sit at Nazi bars period.
@thesiswhisperer Did it months ago. I miss a few folks from there, but honestly if they lack the moral integrity to leave a site which literally pays neonazis to post, then fuck them. I don't want to be associated with them.
@thesiswhisperer Hey, just PSA
When you go to delete your twitter acc, it just disables it for 30 days, and then after the 30 days it actually deletes the acc
@thesiswhisperer I left in November, never looked back. You won't regret it.

@thesiswhisperer Took a look at the deletetwitter thead on twitter. Several were "lets delete twitter and move to threads"

Yay... Let us move from one problematic platform to another.

It's depressive...

@thesiswhisperer i highly respect you for making this decision!

i'm currently only holding my Twitter account open (with brief + infrequent "freshening" visits) to keep someone from stealing my handle and posting trash in my name.

i wish i could just delete it, though. does anyone have feedback on the morality of absently "occupying" Twitter like this? maybe i need to finish deleting my old tweets for it to be more neutral. open to others' ideas 💡

@thesiswhisperer You've got a home here at the hairy elephant, my tech cousin. Peace be with you, and thank you for making such a bold statement of ethics.

@thesiswhisperer
@briankrebs
I'm keeping my account live, waiting for the inevitable Morgan Stanley takeover in hopefully less than a year.

But "keeping it live" means insulting Elon Musk once every couple of weeks and that is it.

Elon likes being the bartender at the Nazi bar.

@ncweaver @thesiswhisperer @briankrebs by your own analogy, you're choosing to hang out in the Nazi bar just to occasionally insult the bar tender. Weird choice.
@ncweaver @thesiswhisperer @briankrebs Once a month, I tweet a message telling people to find me here. Why not delete my account? Because I don't want some Nazi grabbing my username and posting crap as me. And like @ncweaver, I expect Twitter to end up with new ownership and management courtesy of the bankruptcy court.
@thesiswhisperer For me, it was the general boosting of flat-out fascists and other sundry bigots, the general distastefulness of helping Elon make money, and the fact that my local (Slovene) corner of Twitter has bern totally astroturfed by our hard right. So after the fall of mastodon.lol, I’ve rejoined the Holy Roman Empire of social media. 😉
@thesiswhisperer Entirely your choice, but have you considered leaving that as your last tweet, and just locking the account? They've threatened to release previously used usernames, and I don't know how sensitive your content may be to impersonation.
@thesiswhisperer my social media use has tanked over the last year because of caring for my wife after her heart attack and stroke. I still have my Twitter accounts, but they are dormant. I expect to return to social media at some point here on Mastadon, but when I do return I will probably use it very differently than I did in the past.
@thesiswhisperer Mastodon and Threads seem like the best bets
@thesiswhisperer I left yesterday actually, it's been a difficult thing to close off but made significantly easier by dufus over there being who he is

@thesiswhisperer Welcome. My limit was Musk removing 'See latest tweets first' because it destroyed my carefully curated feed and made it useless for me. I had 2,000 followers there but instantly more engagement here.

Suggestion, as you have so many followers: keep your Twitter account a while longer than a month and use it just to share your experience here, nothing else. For anything else link to your account here.

@thesiswhisperer agreed - I’ve been toe in, toe out but now I’m leaving the cesspool. I’ll give it a week or so to try and convince others to follow them I’m deleting tweets, locking and leaving. Musk will delete inactive users after a while but 🤷‍♀️
@thesiswhisperer I haven't posted on Twitter since last November. After downloading my tweets and using 3rd party apps to follow people who've come to Mastodon and clean up my mailbox, I set it to private. People said that eliminating my acct. would subject it to bad actors using my username, so I was hesitant about deleting it. Well, I think Twitter did my job for me--it doesn't recognize my email address or password. And I can't recall the new username I adopted. C'est la vie, I guess.

@thesiswhisperer I'm in the same boat. Been on the "I will be leaving, not sure when" thing for a while.

This did it for me.

@thesiswhisperer my line was when they abruptly started banning links to Mastodon. Though I didn't quite expect it to get this bad
@thesiswhisperer Good to see you here on Mastodon!
@thesiswhisperer Look, anytime you have a chance to pay a guy sitting in a Romanian prison for rape and sex trafficking. . .
