The party caught on pretty quickly so eventually they were telling him stuff like "Just stick to casting burning hands!" after he accidentally teleported himself across the room two turns in a row.

And the explanation I came up with was both that he was so old that he didn't necessarily remember how to do it correctly and he wasn't used to a humanoid form so he might get the somatic components wrong.

I could also scale it to the party's level as the game went on.

And to keep the tension in a battle he knows that *he'll* probably survive just about anything that can get thrown at him, but he tends to forget that the party are not CR 21, so he does not have a good sense of danger.

He has to roll to see how well he remembers how to do it. I think I gave him up to level 2 spells as freebies but after that he has to roll percentiles. So for 3rd it was something like he has to roll under 90, for 5th under 70, 6th under 50 etc. And if he messes up then it's a roll on the wild magic table.

So he *can* cast something like Disintegrate, but there's a 50% chance he might cast Grease on himself instead.

Thinking about a game I used to run and a mechanic I came up with to have a dragon occasionally help as an NPC without completely breaking the game.

He's an ancient copper dragon so he is *old* old and his favorite disguise is as an elderly dragonborn wizard. He knows a lot of spells but the most complicated ones have a catch.

I love the people who are like "Wheat is poison to your brain!" Unless you have Celiac, no.

Like, I remember that book Grain Brain from a couple years ago when I worked at Barnes & Noble, because it wasn't shelved under diet or health.

It was shelved under self-help, which I think is revealing because it doesn't even meet the low standards of the health or diet sections.

I found an episode of a podcast by two dieticians explaining why it's bullshit.

The female oriole was on the hummingbird feeder this morning. I checked the oriole feeder and refilled the jelly reservoir before I left for work.
An ally is someone who will drive you to that gender affirming surgery, post about voting against that bill, speak up at that public forum, donate to mutual aid, correct someone who misgenders you even if you’re not around, call out that racist joke, stand in solidarity with that boycott, refuse preferential treatment to their own detriment, take the initiative to educate themselves, disassociate from and deplatform bigots. Do the uncomfortable thing.

We have a guy around here known simply as Parrot Guy who walks around with a green parrot on his shoulder and I just saw him again after a long time.

He apparently has two different parrots of the same species, a big one and a small one.

Showed up to take a patient out of the ER after a fall with a head strike on thinners and the first thing I noticed was his left pupil was twice the size of the right.

Turns out he's blind in that eye and it's chronic but it gave me pause. His nurse had just taken over and hadn't even noticed.

I also gave him the champion background of fighter so he can crit on a 19. Mostly for the comedy of critting with a chair leg or a beer stein or whatever he happens to have.
