I fully believe Lisa McDaniel is a malignant narcissist and she hurt one child and killed another out of a need for attention.
And I believe Dr. Jayne Ness needs to be investigated for failing to report as a mandated reporter because they have her on tape admitting to suspicions that Lisa was abusing her son Collin.
Mishelle's story reminds me a lot of a friend I had growing up. Her sister was born with a hypoxic brain injury and her mother later developed breast cancer and my friend learned quickly that her needs were always an afterthought.
Even though Mishelle wasn't the target of the medical child abuse she still suffered immensely and talks openly about the damage it did. And then as well as now she's been the scapegoat for anything that goes wrong in her family.
And the explanation I came up with was both that he was so old that he didn't necessarily remember how to do it correctly and he wasn't used to a humanoid form so he might get the somatic components wrong.
I could also scale it to the party's level as the game went on.
And to keep the tension in a battle he knows that *he'll* probably survive just about anything that can get thrown at him, but he tends to forget that the party are not CR 21, so he does not have a good sense of danger.
He has to roll to see how well he remembers how to do it. I think I gave him up to level 2 spells as freebies but after that he has to roll percentiles. So for 3rd it was something like he has to roll under 90, for 5th under 70, 6th under 50 etc. And if he messes up then it's a roll on the wild magic table.
So he *can* cast something like Disintegrate, but there's a 50% chance he might cast Grease on himself instead.
