You never quite know what you’ll run into at a North Star Auction — The Philharmonic Concert Master DA-MAR Music System (Reed Organ) — In simple terms, it’s an accordion without a squeezer.

@adtothebone
Nice #ChordOrgan! The wood body makes that a pretty high-class number in the species, at least for the little ones like that

They’re so charming 😍🪗

Come in all sorts of wacky varieties

(bonus #Accorgan [edit: #Pianaccord] = #Accordion / #ReedOrgan cross!

#Organ #organology #musicology

@AccordionBruce That 4th one!

@adtothebone
I did some #chordOrgan threads on Twitter which might have featured more #Accorgan [edit: #Pianaccord] photos (did I spell it right, with two c’s?) there’s a patent. They were made by this Accordion company in Denver

Came out right as the accordion peaked in the mid 50s, so never had a chance against the rise of amplification

@UkuleleG3orge has one! And says it’s quite short to fit his knees under🦵

@AccordionBruce @UkuleleG3orge Accorgan! A lovely portmanteau.

@adtothebone @UkuleleG3orge
I was wrong!
It was called a #Pianaccord! or a “Console #Accordion

(The Accorgan was a brand name for one of electronic organ accordions that tried to compete in the sixties+)

Here’s the patent from 1951 where Ernest Bonvicini just called it an “Accordion”

Really? Product differentiation anyone?

@adtothebone @UkuleleG3orge
I thought I mentioned the #Pianaccord in my #AccordionRevolution history of the #accordion 📚 but I guess not?

I may have only learned about them when I was researching electronic Accordions for a talk after I published

That was fun 🤩 ❤️‍🔥🪗

Here’s a few of the hits from that including ones from #farfisa (started as an accordion company) and #Hohner (who made millions of #harmonicas 😬 accordions and #keyboards like the #clavinet)

But I really want a #Multimonica!

@AccordionBruce @adtothebone That Transicord is interesting. It looks like a C-system layout, but with no C row on the outer row, putting the B row as the 2nd row in. Fascinating.

@UkuleleG3orge @adtothebone
That’s the Finnish C system. They bumped the rows down one because…who needs standardization?

Results of beautiful #organology chaos! #AccordionHistorion 🤓

Which made it hard for #accordion manufacturers wanting to move towards mass production in the 1920s or so

That’s when American dealers started pushing immigrants to play the new-fangled #piano accordion 🪗

It was a generic homogenizer of the stew of immigrant button systems

One manual to rule them all

@UkuleleG3orge @adtothebone
That’s how you recognize a #Finnish #Accordion player

This group #SawtoothDuo is playing here in vancouver in June, and I said, hey that guy’s from #Finland 🇫🇮

@AccordionBruce @UkuleleG3orge @adtothebone I tried playing with my foot on the monitor once, didn't really suit me ;-)
@mzdt @UkuleleG3orge @adtothebone
I searched really hard for that picture just because I thought it looked cool 🪗 😎
@AccordionBruce @UkuleleG3orge @adtothebone my foot on the monitor experiment may also have been the gig I tried a phaser pedal with all the knobs at max trying to sound like I was playing through a Leslie speaker ;-)
@mzdt @UkuleleG3orge @adtothebone
Needed the actual vintage #leslie speaker that went with the #Cordovox #organ #accordion 😉 🪗
@AccordionBruce @mzdt @adtothebone I was playing my new CBA the other day and realized that a Leslie speaker is really just mimicing a good accordion musette.
@AccordionBruce @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge Ok, so thanks for sharing the BW print ad! I had to go and find an original of that for myself! Great spin of the original piano ad. The gal in the background is the best!

@adtothebone @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge
Is it a take off of another ad? I’m not familiar with an earlier referent

I haven’t seen an original of this #Cordovox ad or where it appeared. I had it from a fine amateur historian who posted their work online as a pdf which is gone, but the link is at: https://web.archive.org/web/20200927172648/http://caffetrieste.com/Abrief.pdf

Wayback Machine

@adtothebone @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge
Ah that rings a bell. Or resolves a chord. One suspended in my head by that other ad for years it seems. That feels nice. Thank you!

@adtothebone @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge
But I don’t know if the @internetarchive stores the full PDF there?

It would be a pity if they do not. Because it is a mighty piece of quirky #Accordion scholarship

@AccordionBruce @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge @internetarchive I did an image search and found an original magazine page with the Cordovox ad on eBay. I made a $4 offer and they accepted. No details of the magazine it was from.
@adtothebone @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge @internetarchive
If it ends up, saying anything on the back, I would love to hear a date or anything like that

@adtothebone @mzdt @UkuleleG3orge they didn’t work on my phone, but definitely a good number of those @internetarchive
backups of the wonderful obsessive #cordovox #accordion 🪗 history work great on desktop ✅

We’ll worth a look to go with your original ad!

@AccordionBruce @adtothebone @UkuleleG3orge I am very lucky to have inherited this beautiful Farfisa Pianorgan from my auntie. Still works but blows musty air around when played. Its age is hinted at by the remains of a light socket connector on the power plug! #pianorgan #accordion #reedorgan

@johnl @adtothebone @UkuleleG3orge

Book Review | Classic Keys: Keyboard Sounds That Launched Rock Music

The authors are both devoted admirers (and experienced users) of classic keyboards and, together, they have created a marvellously impressive book detailing these instruments in great depth and breadth.
