I had the most enjoyable circus experience at Cirque Bidon, a traditional French traveling circus in idyllic village of Veuil, in the Indre dept. of Central France.
The performance takes place outdoors, in a palc—an open-air circus without a big top. The setting includes a small ring topped by a portico, surrounded by wooden stands and encircled by horse-drawn caravans.

It’s a beautifully nostalgic and intimate experience with amazingly talented performers.
