Maldives, here are the exclusive images of the fatal cave for divers.
The Dan Europe that mobilized to recover the bodies of the Italian divers in the Maldives has released the video filmed inside the cave where the tragedy occurred. The images were shared exclusively on Tg1’s 8pm news program, making for the first time visible the route that led the divers from the first illuminated cavity to the second dark room. An accompanying document accompanied by the testimony of Sami Paakkarinen, one of the Finnish rescuers called by the Dan Europe foundation to recover the bodies, was also released.
“It’s clear they were too deep, in a place where they shouldn’t have been,” he said. “They had the typical equipment for diving in the Maldives, but to dive in caves requires more, more devices, more tanks, the rebreather and safety devices.”
The underwater diving instructor emphasized the difficulties: “I feared we would never find them, there was also the possibility that they were lost in the ocean and never recovered. Then when we identified the tunnel that wasn’t on the map and we saw markings in the sand, we realized that was the path to take.”
Paakkarinen plans to return to the Maldives in the future in the same cave to map it. “That’s the only way we can prevent other accidents,” he concluded.
