Hitting Fox in the pocketbook doesn't work if they earn more from their lies thru increased cable demand fees than they pay out to the companies they've smeared.

The market isn't going to self-correct here. We need to find a way to actually stop the lies.

@georgetakei For starters, this settlement with Dominion should have included a requirement for Fox to drop the word ‘News’ from their name. Then again, they could probably call themselves ‘Fox Nutsack’ and their followers wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. 🙄
@AnnBindley2 @georgetakei Maybe Fox Nutsack was suggested, but Rupert Murdoch rejected it because he thought people would perceive "nutsack" as a reference to him personally.
@georgetakei People need to cancel their cable subscriptions with the explicit reason that "Fox news is bundled, and I don't want it"
@stephenczetty @georgetakei if i cancel my cable subscription i pay more to the cable company, because it costs *more* to not include cable with my internet. I cancel the cable entirely i loose internet. With cable companies having a defacto-monopoly on internet access in almost all US areas, that's not a practical option.

@masukomi @georgetakei Wait, WTF? So they are throwing in cable for free when you buy a discounted internet service? (Or vice-versa.) The math doesn't really add up there, I guess either cable or internet is considered a loss-leader? Or their prices are way way too inflated already... I'm not sure what to do in that case...

I've been cable (television) free for >10 years, so I don't know the state of things today, but last I checked, the price of internet alone was less than the price of the bundle.

I get occasional marketing crap from them to add the bundle, and either the total price would go up slightly, or the internet speed caps would go down.

@stephenczetty @georgetakei

kind-of? it's more like if i pay comcast $100 i get cable tv + internet but if i get rid of the cable tv, i have to pay $120 (prices made up). Note that this is MINIMAL cable tv. the service level no-one wants because it's useless, BUT it means you are configured for good cable so they can try and convince you to add channel packages with no additional install needed.

@masukomi @georgetakei Ugh. Comcast. I'm sorry. But still, that's insane.
@masukomi @georgetakei Actually? Check their business packages. It might be more expensive but you'll get faster speeds and no cable.
@stephenczetty @masukomi @georgetakei or maybe use your antennas and sample free tv, and if that sucks, turn off the tv and read. Just saying. One can say no to shit tv that the Comcast foists on its customers
@MarkBrigham @stephenczetty to be clear, just because they supply cable tv to me, doesn't mean i _watch_ it. I don't know why i would when I have the entire internet.
@masukomi Even the Fox "news" problem is a market consolidation problem.
@masukomi @stephenczetty @georgetakei
Major mobile providers offer wireless home internet ranging from $25 to $50 per month.
#DumpCable
@masukomi @stephenczetty @georgetakei call them up and complain. Tell them you want a Fox “news” disinformation rebate every month on your cable bill because you refuse to pay for #RWNJ garbage.
@georgetakei don't worry George, the trump scandal will probably cause a rush of new cases that will further smear what dregs of reputation that network, its affiliates, and its chosen political horses have left it
@georgetakei
Cable TV?
They still have that? Not for long.
Plus lots more lawsuits in the pipeline. Now they all have a roadmap
@georgetakei We could restore the Truth in Journalism laws that Reagan revoked, for starters.
@NerdiCorgi @georgetakei Those never existed. There was a “fairness doctrine” that never applied to cable outlets.
@georgetakei it's a shame Dominion caved. They had a solid case. They could have destroyed Fox by dragging every host on the witness stand. Justice not served.
@dpscifi @georgetakei
Not caved. Civil suits are about $ not justice. Anybody think that Fox dug almost a $1B out of the couch cushions? Stock holders will not be happy, they will be under microscope. They released all the info they go .. you would not have seen anything new from the witness box. More suits coming .. Fox is going to be hurt by this ...
@Kevin_Wandtke @georgetakei why settle if it hurts? Because Fox knew the trial would be so much worse. Dominion lied when they said this was about reputation, it was about money.
@georgetakei Do we know for a fact that cable companies are willing to pay more for Fox News? Why should they? It’s not like Fox is going to stop needing to be on cable. I don’t see where Fox has the advantage in that negotiation.
@georgetakei ban bundling. It’s anticompetative and antidemocratic.
@georgetakei FCC can pull their broadcast license
@georgetakei People need to cancel their cable TV or any other service which takes part of their bill and gives it to Fox.
@georgetakei cable companies need to change Fox to a premium channel, like Showtime, etc.
Let the idiots who want that crap pay extra so the rest of us can pull out.
@RoguePlayer @georgetakei that's how it is on my country. Only available on the most expensive package.

@georgetakei I feel naive that the settlement news hit me so hard. How dare I have hope again?

It hit me hard because going after & holding rightwing media accountable is the only way we move forward past the radicalization they cause. The more they get away with it, the worse society gets. Rightwing media needs to be heavily regulated, if not gutted. It's crumbling our Democracy.

@georgetakei

End-stage capitalism is called that because...well...it is 'end-stage.' The new communications paradigm has hit the wall as far as monetizing truthfulness.

The 1st Amendment has to bend far enough to embrace 'free true speech' as the more correct definition of 'free speech.'

@skydog @georgetakei yep. If you look to Capital to do the just thing, it will always disappoint you.
@georgetakei Exactly. This settlement doesn't change anything with respect to the underlying rot of misinformation endangering the republic, but it does help the GQP budget more accurately for their next coup attempt.

@georgetakei Big change starts with small wins. Fox going on the legal record to admit that they fabricated news at the request of a political party is both a good start and a small win.

I think the trick here is to find the balance between a free press and an accountable press. The government cannot hold the press accountable, but a private entity could.

Perhaps a celebrity could spearhead this and start organizing resources behind it.

@georgetakei

George it's going to be paid by insurance

@georgetakei The US needs to completely rewrite all laws on fraud. If anything is posted, printed, or broadcast for profit that cannot be confirmed as fact with government approved references it must be labeled "Fiction" or else be considered fraud and those responsible be charged with a crime. This whole alternative facts and alternate reality crap needs to stop.

@georgetakei

The shareholders are suing Murdoch. Fox was able to do whatever they like if it makes them money. But now, these huge settlements are costing them money. The 1% doesn't like anything that costs them money

@georgetakei No one forces you to buy their network. Cut cable.
@georgetakei Their shareholders should now sue them for losing all that money.

@georgetakei one reporter tried to argue that dominion was the winner when fox: A. Gets to avoid saying anything harmful. B. Pays less than half of probable full amount. C. Used their strategy of lengthening trial to cause dominion to run out of $. D. Is having others pay for it with price increases
This would be like getting a $500 speeding ticket reduced to $200 with no points on my license, then having my parents pay it for me. That’s a win in my world.
@georgetakei The DOJ should file a suit against them on behalf of the whole country to get them to pay for the damage they've done.
@georgetakei also, can we appreciate for a moment that this lawsuit is about company reputation and not, idk, undermining the core of a democratic political system and fueling post-election violence as often seen in African states?
@georgetakei just cut the cord from cable. refuse to pay 1 dime for Fox anymore.
@georgetakei Hopefully, in the suits still pending, their worst/most popular personalities are forced to air to their audience that they lied and they knew they were lying: https://newsie.social/@blackburied/110221971237165084
Musta dawned on me thusly (@[email protected])

Hopefully, the #Dominion settlement includes requiring #FoxNews to air daily retractions at the beginning of each show, including: [ ] "I lie to please you" -- Tucker Carlson [ ] "You suck-in all our bullish**" -- Sean Hannity [ ] "Our viewers are the real idiots" Laura Ingraham [ ] Other, please reply.

Bringing back the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Fairness Doctrine (abolished by Reagan's FCC in 1987), and applying it to Cable and Broadcast, would help so much with our Fox problem. Growing up, American news media was different, and opinion shows were balanced between left and right.
The Supreme Court upheld the Fairness Doctrine in 1969, but Reagan's FCC repealed it and then we got Rush Limbuagh, starting the decline to what we see today.

FCC fairness doctrine - Wikipedia

@danwentzel
WHY WE NEVER WILL BE DEMOCRACY :
1 CITIZENS UNITED
2 FAIRNESS DOCTRINE
3 ELECTORAL COLLEGE
4 ZOMBIES IN SENATE
@danwentzel Does the FCC even have the authority to regulate content anywhere other than the (decreasingly relevant) "public airwaves"?
@StevenCapsuto I believe Congress could pass a law expanding the FCC's authority to regulate content to include cable, but there would no doubt be a fierce court battle over it.

@danwentzel

The fairness doctrine could be expanded to include any entity with a reach of more than say 100,000 people..... That would incorporate all social media influencers. The social media companies could keep their common carrier status....The influencers themselves would be liable.

@danwentzel no, this is a horrible idea and about as likely to pass as restructuring our branches of government to be more egalitarian, which would be significantly more impact full and effective. Fox News would be significantly different if it couldn't focus on the minority part of minority rule and expect favorable electoral outcomes.
@georgetakei A poem about the winning winningness of #dominion.
There once was a storefront that made bank
from Democracy’s pulling of hand cranks.

But Democracy failing, sent this storefront flailing
to sue off the lies as a side flank.

Smart Smart, Dominion, made their money off of the minions.
and at the end of the day,
the lies never went away,
so they developed a “legitimate” side bank.

@georgetakei Together We Stand. May Day strike? Shut everything down. A list of grievances. That our elected ones would need to address.
We need to do something.

@georgetakei perhaps a massive amounts of FTC complaints. They are after all, misleading their consumers. They don’t even believe the lies they’re telling.
