I need your help...

Every day I put out a post to encourage people to Toot about their lives. Mundane or interesting.

I do this is to keep the social aspect of Mastodon alive. It's easy to forget, in a world of niche content, all of the things that make us who we are.

When we share our lives, we can see ourselves in others. We can see what makes us different, and yet the same.

That's beautiful.

So PLEASE, if you see any of my boosts with #today in it, BOOST it.

Let's keep Mastodon social.

@Mrfunkedude followed the hashtag. Will boost.
@Mrfunkedude My #college age son was home on #coop for a semester and left to go back today. The three younger kids (15, 17, 17) are all going to miss him terribly. They've been reading #homestuck together. Now the Littles have no one but each other to pal around with.
@davidr I hope he returns to school filled with the love of his siblings.

@Mrfunkedude

I'm generally up for a natter if I'm here, usually I'll put #joinIn but if I remember I'll add #today too πŸ™‚

@Mrfunkedude People used to get laughed at for posting things like what they had for breakfast on Twitter.

Maybe we should have stuck with that.

@dbsalk I always saw sharing a foodie pic as a way of thanking the chef and promoting their work. Even if it's the chef at home.
@dbsalk @Mrfunkedude For breakfast we had sesame bagels scooped and toasted, goat cheese cream cheese, blueberry jam, herring, tea for me, coffee for him and pineapple. #today #Breakfast #food

@AthenaFatima777 @Mrfunkedude That sounds delightful! Except for the herring.πŸ˜‰

#Today I took my sons (still on winter break) over to their grandma's for lunch and #boardgames. We picked up from #Portillos and played Sorry! and Ticket to Ride.

I missed breakfast this morning, but my chopped salad from Portillo's made up for it.

@dbsalk @AthenaFatima777 @Mrfunkedude Portillos and Board Games sounds like a great combo!
@cetan @AthenaFatima777 @Mrfunkedude It was! And it will be repeated. 🀣🍟
@Mrfunkedude I like that. I do post just regular everyday thoughts and such every day, but most of what people see from me is boosts. I'm not super happy with the balance (percentage of boosts is too high), so I need to work on that.
@Mrfunkedude I'm on Friendica, is boost the same as reshare?
@Mrfunkedude I was on .social in 2016 and it felt a bit like a circle of friends who all knew each other and it was hard for me to engage. Years in the wilderness have made me bolder about sharing 😊

@Mrfunkedude

When I first arrived here from that other place, there were posts galore telling us to "boost, boost, boost."

I also prefer to see posts written by a person I'm following, whether the posts are personal stories, information, or opinion pieces, than all boosts. I think we are busy though, and with so many bright and informed people in the #Fediverse, it's easy to boost than to write.

@sandearl @Mrfunkedude I just wish my depression and social anxiety would stop making me think I have nothing to say.
@zaxusemk @sandearl say it anyway. What interests you in your life will probably interest someone else.
@Mrfunkedude @zaxusemk @sandearl I was very active in the early days of chat rooms, but there was so many hurtful people who would just bully others just because they were anonymous.. I have pretty much been a voyeur ever since, I’ve always been shy in social situations and just couldn’t handle the meanness…trying to break out of my box.

@tmalcolm @Mrfunkedude @zaxusemk @sandearl

It's a pretty chill group here, and @Mrfunkedude can show you some ropes. If you've got questions just ask.

@zaxusemk @sandearl @Mrfunkedude People seem to like it when I ask them questions about their life. I find that helps me with conversations in social situations. #introvert #depression
@zaxusemk @sandearl @Mrfunkedude One of the reasons why I haven't posted on my own in a while. I start to, and then meh.
@zaxusemk @sandearl @stabforddeathrage most of our lives are β€œmeh” to us because we’re so used to it. However everyone does things a little differently and someone might be interested in how you do things.

@Mrfunkedude @sandearl @stabforddeathrage

To clarify a bit:

It's not that I'm thinking "should I post this? Maybe, maybe not..."

It's my brain saying "do I have anything to say at all? Nope, got nothin."

Which I know isn't actually the case, but is a symptom of my depression and anxiety that I find very difficult to overcome.

When I'm not depressed, I'm honestly shocked that I actually DO have opinions and thoughts. But when that shit takes over, it's like a month of nothing to say.

Sucks.

@sandearl @Mrfunkedude I was thinking along these same lines. I'd rather interact with someone who has at least an occasional original thought vs. someone who only shares what others have to say.

Yes, boosting is important. So is the mundane... it keeps us grounded. Without the ordinary things to talk about, this place becomes like Twitter where everyone is just looking for the next sensational clickbait.

@Mrfunkedude
If you get a moment ...
#BluesHighway 🎢 I'm there 🎢
@Mrfunkedude #today finally fixed little rock tumbler. The grub screw doesn't take a Phillips head, it's got a hex
@Mrfunkedude the personal life stories on here under #today come a close second to the gorgeous #naturephotography and #birdphotography that I most appreciate on Mastadon.
@girls_can @Mrfunkedude Ooh, I should start adding those tags. I've generally only been using the photography tag and the tag-of-the-day (like WildlifeWednesday)
@Mrfunkedude #Today I got a compliment from the school district attorney on my Prior Written Notice-writing skillz. Special education folkz know how tricky those can be!
@Mrfunkedude Sure thing. Please remember that we are not the birdsite. A like here and there, a boost here and there is good enough for me. Cheers
@Mrfunkedude Thank you for subscribing to my tumblr. (Which is a joke that I make about the posts I write, that has recently become a confusing joke because Tumblr is apparently not only still a thing but federating?!)
@Mrfunkedude
I love this idea. I believe this is what made me fascinated by social media, the ability to connect with others around the world. To share bits of our lives.

@Mrfunkedude

I ate a sandwich #today for lunch at @workantile , my coworking space. (falafel from the sub shop around the corner, if you need to know that!)

@w8emv @workantile I haven’t had a good falafel in years it seems. Yum.
@Mrfunkedude had a fantastic meeting with my new boss. I felt heard, validated, and valued. I wanna bottle this feeling.
@TheNurseIsIn @Mrfunkedude that happened to me today and I transferred departments πŸ‘Έ
@Mrfunkedude hello I M a long time peace activist. I started marching since VietNam. Since then I've raised 3 kids and have 12 grand kids and 3 great grandkids. I've been a mental health and drug counselor, a painter, dreamer and organizer for many years. Today I am focusing on getting through my partners fight against Cancer and taking down Fascists.I am a 50plus years vegetarian and spiritualist. Peace beautiful people.

@Mrfunkedude I love this reminder, too. The site-that-shall-not-be-named was so obsessed with going viral that the focus was on being relevant even at the expense of real and lived experiences.

Thank you for this post. #today

@TheNurseIsIn @Mrfunkedude

One thing I do with the extra character space here that I never did there, is basically make it into a microblog. That's usually just a reflection of sheer brain chaos, mixed with witchy or Heathen stuff (which makes sense with my instance), as mundane and everyday as possible but... it's there? πŸ™ƒ So once a day there's usually a blog-ish post from me... and how early in the day for my time zone tells you how the executive dysfunction is going. πŸ˜‚

@DoranOfTheNorth @Mrfunkedude that's actually a pretty perfect way to approach it.
@Mrfunkedude I'll gladly boost the #today toots when I see them.
For me, a new day has started (its almost 5AM).
#Today I'm at the gym first. Getting some exercises in to start the day.
Then I'll visit my parents, take my mum to Germany for grocery shopping (we live near the German border).
Hopefully in the afternoon I can ride my hometrainer and game a little. There are several games I'd love to play more. 😊
@PlaystationPixy that sounds like a very nice day to me. I hope you appreciate it. It’s the simple things in life that mean the most the older that you get.
@Mrfunkedude thanks! I really do. I enjoy the gym as it helps my overall health.
Plus spending time with mum, helping her as I can, always feels good.
With my parents getting older and dad battling cancer, I enjoy every bit I can with them. Which can be hard as my parents have their routines set for many years and I feel like an intruder at times. 😊
But I do appreciate every decent day I get! Living with chronic pain is learning to deal with it all. 😊
@Mrfunkedude thanks for the reminder
@Mrfunkedude I need a divorce. But there is a financial cliff that I just can’t throw myself over. How is that?

@kansaskrid i’m sorry that you’re struggling. I know change can be scary and intimidating, especially when it’s not something that we wouldn’t normally choose.

I hope that you find the peace and contentment that you need.

@Mrfunkedude Working on it. It is a slow process. But thanks!
@Mrfunkedude Hi from SW Scotland. This is a local statue, (from FB - thank you to whoever created this). I love when the hard working end of society is celebrated. But also how it confronts the reality of waiting for those at sea to return. (The Solway Harvester crew were local to us here).
@Mrfunkedude I will do this and I encourage you, if you like, to boost and/or answer my #ShellQ posts that I do daily as well! Same general purpose, just to get to know people and particularly to encourage them to contemplate the good/funny/creative things in their lives.
@Mrfunkedude I talk about how to make compost at home because it is a material that sequesters carbon in the soil and helps us create cool gardens.
@nicole2g I live in a condo now, and I used to live in a house. I really miss having my own garden and being able to grow my own food.

@Mrfunkedude you can still compost in 20-gallon bins to create enough volume for indoor plants this is how I proceed https://mastodon.social/@nicole2g/109378112801272206

The tag #CompostAtHome detail my process.
