How many of us secretly wants to be robot girls because it is easier to gender, cause you either install/uninstall modules as needed as opposed to maintaining everything organically? No?? Oh cool cool cool carry on, nothing to see here..

@adhdeanasl
Exactly. SF is a way to look at today’s issue with a new lens; it always has been. Plus, as you say, it’s about how humans act with, to, and against one another. “The Expanse” could be argued as being in the tradition of “The Iliad” or something. Tales of people are all we can tell, and the interaction of humanity is fascinating if done well or uses a hook which appeals.

Like phaser rifles. PEW! PEW!

@IanAMartin I’ve always put it this way: good sci-fi (or any genre, really) is about people and relationships, no matter the setting. Case in point: The Expanse. Sure, there’s lots of star gateway razzle and earth-shattering rock throwing dazzle, but the core of the story is the Roci crew and their dynamic, and how they fit into this complex world of system politics with Chrisjen Avasarala, Anderson Dawes, Fred Johnson, etc. @Mrfunkedude

@Mrfunkedude
For example: Deep Space Nine has any number of episodes which have very little, if any, moments in space, but is rammed to bursting with examinations of morality, decisions of governance, and the human condition.

Science Fiction can be a thriller, but it can also not be and still be SF. This proves that the ‘thriller’ stuff of — zoooooom — and — pew! pew! — is totally fun but not *necessary*.

@Mrfunkedude @Nasu_Nasu I was annoyed by Reddit’s decisions so I went looking for alternatives. Found a handful of different things, but decided to roll the dice on mastodon.

I’ve also poked and prodded other offerings in the Fediverse.

@Mrfunkedude my experience with the fediverse surprisingly predates the fediverse. I’ve always tried to self host my own stuff, email, chat, etc. Many years ago, in twitter’s early days I experimented with a self hosted clone (StatusNet back then). I never could get anyone else to use it with me, so I kinda gave up on it when Friendica showed up. I switched to using Friendica for a while because it was able to bridge with twitter and Facebook and let me use my “weird thing” while everyone else used twitter and Facebook. Facebook eventually disabled ability, and so again, I abandoned the thing nobody else I knew used. Over the years I looked other options, like disaspora, but never could get any of my friends into. Jump to a few years ago, a fascist decided to buy twitter, and everyone started to jump ship. So I decided I would give it another go, and discovered what a rich and vibrant place the Fediverse has developed into since I last looked at it. Now I’m here, and only here, to stay

Tone is never constant in #StarTrek.

This paragraph is nonsense.

" We also know there will be a puppet episode, and if the new teaser is any indication, there will be a Wild West-like setting and even dinosaurs, because why not? On the whole however, the new teaser seems to confirm a return to a more serious Trekkie tone. "

Suggested edit:

Despite the public knowing there will be ...
the #StarTrekSNW S4 teaser trailer tries to convey a more serious tone.

Dear Star Trek shows…

Star Trek fans don’t care about special effects. They just don’t. You could have the greatest CGI background you want, but if the story doesn’t speak to the heart of what Star Trek is, the fantastic ship battles and stellar scenery won’t mean shit.

So please, take that CGI money, and spend it on writers who know the show.

Thanks.

@Mrfunkedude via the activitystreams spec. I saw the w3c had a new something going on and I was curious what it was.
