@3goodthings

I had a pretty awesome Father's Day weekend. Really, just great stuff all around.

Ran the Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate 5K in my hometown of Evanston, Illinois, USA with my sister and niece. Weather was perfect and I'm relatively content with my 32:17 finish time.

Took the 9yo to Brickworld Chicago so we could geek out over cool #Lego stuff. Look up "Lego Great Ball Contraption" on YouTube. We could watch that thing for HOURS.

You might think that Star Trek is a show about exploration, about science, about morality, about what humanity is capable of if we truly embrace the best of ourselves. That is a misconception! Star Trek is, in fact, a show about the weirdest chairs you've ever seen.

I know a picture is worth 1,000 words but here are some words I wrote for you Dad in the book I wrote, I had to write, for you. Thinking of you today on #Father'sDay and always.

"I don't know if he tried to be a great dad or if it just came naturally, but he managed to do what I as a parent have strived to achieve: to be the parent your children would choose . . . so that they would say, 'I'll take that one.' I totally would have said that about my dad."

Dear Every Restaurant:

I don't want to place an online order, I want to look at your menu.

I don't want to visit Facebook or any other site demanding that I login to an app.

Current offerings with accurate prices are appreciated.

Thanks to the 3 of you already doing this!

Bon Appetit!

Mother's and Father's Day have always been rough, even before both my parents passed. This year with both of them gone, it's seems even harder. My parents weren't good parents, a part of me wants to soften that. I think when people die we are often expected to, but true is true.

If it's a hard day for you too, it's okay to feel sad and overwhelmed, even if it feels like the person didn't deserve your grief. Sometimes what we are grieving is the life and support we should have had.

"Is that a banana in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

When I was a kid, my dad used to say that for him, EVERY day was Father's Day. Single-digit me thought that was a silly thing to say because I was too young to recognize commercial marketing at work.

As a lucky dad to two amazing boys, I now understand what he meant. They are everything, and today - every day, really - is about them.

As it should be.

Miss you and your wisdom, Dad. You were the best.
