NEW: Twitter has introduced a $4 daily lunch subsidy through an online delivery service to replace its former full-service cafeteria, per an email shared with me. Employees noting this does not even cover the delivery fee
@caseynewton how petty for a company like this, almost worse than not giving anything
@caseynewton four bux! thats like, what, half a latte from bluebottle?
@caseynewton Plot twist: Twitter gets a referral bonus.
@caseynewton I read the first sentence and was about to immediately comment with the second
@caseynewton as a sftwr engr I don't know why anybody would want to work there with still so many dev job openings everywhere
@caseynewton Management wants to know who's still got time to eat.
@caseynewton somehow worse than no money at all.
@april @caseynewton not really. I’ll take the $4
@ckane @caseynewton okay but you can only spend it on delivery food and it doesn’t rollover
@april @caseynewton I get that, but I’d still take that perk at my job.
@ckane @april @caseynewton The issue is that lunch was originally covered by the full-service cafeteria, so $4 for lunch is a pretty massive cut in benefits. If you were barely getting by on your salary before this change, now you aren't.
@caseynewton So we know he's stopped paying Twitter rent. Has he done any salary cutting for the remaining employees? Were any of the employees who were 'accidentally' terminated able to negotiate pay rises in order to accept re-employment? Are remaining employees being paid more after agreeing to be 'hardcore'?
@caseynewton had to double check I was following the real Casey account because of how absurd this otherwise sounds
@caseynewton I’m just going to assume he is going to demand they work through lunch if they do this.
@caseynewton really looking forward to reading the next Platformer after what’s happened the past couple of days.
@jon @caseynewton Especially if it actually disambiguates all the ambiguities in the new policy.
@stshank @caseynewton LULZ…and now this
@jon @caseynewton Think of the ENGAGMENT on that sucker!
@jon @caseynewton @stshank What’re the odds that he just brokered a deal to close out his fundraising round with Gulf cash in exchange for Jared becoming CEO? At least 3:1, right?
@jon @stshank @caseynewton right. I’m guessing he got told to step down today by his Saudi investors and Jared. We saw the photos and his body language. But sure moar polls.
@caseynewton Reminds me of when Howard Schultz had special $3 Starbucks gift cards made for his Sonics employees instead of just using the standard $5 ones. Not even enough for a coffee and tip.
@mikeindustries @jimray sheesh, masterclass doesn’t care who gives a course, I guess
@caseynewton this doesn’t even solve the most selfish potential goal of subsidizing lunch, which is to keep people at their desks to work.
@caseynewton also I bet that this subsidy eventually ends up being more expensive than their old cafeteria.
@caseynewton they did sign up for hardcore twitter lol
@caseynewton I get the impressions that stories about being cruel to the remaining Twitter employees are spread specifically to please Musk's base... i.e. right wing trolls who hate Silicon Valley workers because of their "wokeness"
@caseynewton I mean it's one lunch delivery in San Francisco. What could it cost, $4?
@caseynewton maybe forcing extremely hardcore people to negotiate the veldt of mid market is designed to stimulate their running muscles to keep insurance costs down.
@caseynewton I pray you got a good scoop on all these moderation changes.
@caseynewton the one thing Elon does well is trolling and this serves as Exhibit A

@caseynewton Sometimes I wish the #TwitterIsGoingGreat people would start a Mastodon account, like the one @web3isgreat has...

https://twitterisgoinggreat.com

Twitter is Going Great!

Twitter is Going Great is a project inspired by Web3 is Going Just Great to track the latest examples of how Twitter is actively falling to pieces thanks to its current owner Elon Musk (with special guests Jack Dorsey and the Saudi Arabian royal family).

@caseynewton he's doing it to cover the rent, Casey
@caseynewton penny wise pound foolish
@caseynewton it’s bait. Musk is going to fire folks who have time to eat lunch.
@caseynewton at 4$/day that's not even enough for McDonalds. LOL
@caseynewton lol this is fine, tech people should pay for their own lunches or bring them in!
@jpcoblentz @caseynewton
a popular trick to getting tech people to do more work is to bring in lunch. and dinner. EA loved this one back in the day
@resultsboy yeah see i think this is bad tbh, my sister works at [Large Tech Company Named After LOTR] and the meals and perks are blatantly there to make you work more, I prefer leaving work early to ride my bike
@caseynewton wow a whole $4 could Elon be any more tone deaf
@caseynewton I heard they took out the slide, too. Now they have to use the stairs since the landlord shut off the elevator...
@caseynewton check which Elon lacky VC pal invested in that delivery company.

@caseynewton

Might be able to cover a banh mi from somewhere cheap, but that's about it.

@caseynewton I can’t tell if this is a joke.
@caseynewton how long before he starts selling the furniture?
@caseynewton I started working in tech in 2000 and lived through my first employer going under at the end of the first year. They stopped paying for lunches a few months before the end. It was a common thing to see commented on at fuckedcompany.com, before that disappeared
@caseynewton he's going to stop payroll isn't he
@caseynewton you can't even get street kebabs in NYC for $4 anymore🙄

@caseynewton What happened to "It took me half day to set up #Mastodon and I still can't figure it out, unless I wanna spend my vacation reading the user manual?"

A friend, citing your #podcast, "These guys are social media EXPERTS, .. Mastodon must suck if they can't figure it out."

Maybe you have "extended and revised your previous remarks" on your podcast, which I don't follow.

@caseynewton How much could a banana cost? Four dollars?
@caseynewton Stay and work 14 hours/day, but also don't eat.
