Think of people around the world tonight who need Twitter to get their voices heard, to document human rights abuses and injustices, to get attention, expose war crimes, and more.

All of them could be about to be cut off because the world’s richest man wanted to own the libs.

@mehdihasan Billionaires are an existential threat to human civilization. They should be removed for the good of us all, before it is too late. #RIPTwitter
@mehdihasan So many dog rescue groups on there too..I've literally seen dogs rescued right before my eyes on Twitter. Sad that is going to go away 😭
@mehdihasan Yes, and with a federated, decentralized alternative like Mastodon, they can still have a voice. Funded by the masses on federated servers in hundreds of countries around the globe.
@syrus @mehdihasan Engagement levels on Mastadon are also way better than Twitter
@VickiKyriakakis @syrus @mehdihasan as a newbie here I’ve noticed that too. Twitter used to be a fun communicator but over the last few years became filled with trolls and hate. Here it seems responses are genuine and mostly kind.
@Yickyak @syrus @mehdihasan Agreed. And also for non-blue ticks (even before Elon) I think it’s value was questionable. The algorithm rendered most of us invisible and Musk has made it worse. With people driving engagement instead, my engagement rate here is way way higher. And this feels like an actual community as opposed to ppl congregating around blue ticks begging for a little of their light.
@Yickyak @VickiKyriakakis @mehdihasan @syrus YES. Biggest difference I’ve noticed here is that exchanges are always with real people. Half the interactions I get on Twitter are with trolls or bots. Biggest thing missing from Mastodon is just breaking news/local news outlet kind of stuff. I’ve used Twitter for years to find out that kind of stuff and it really needs to get brought over to a Mastodon instance so people can follow.
@andricheli @Yickyak @VickiKyriakakis @mehdihasan @syrus Think it's only a matter of not very much time before all major news orgs host their own servers.
@mehdihasan @Yickyak @ejoftheweb @VickiKyriakakis @syrus that would be great and I’m sure ultimately news outlets would prefer to have more control over their content.

@syrus @mehdihasan

I'm 70 yrs old . Retired writing a cookbook
Had multiple careers and one of them included working as a Mac Specialist for Microsoft when the first version of Windows came out
Both my daughter and son in are Union Organizers
I ALSO remember when 1st laser printer came out. I remember thinking that this (printer) is going to change things
As I struggled a bit this AM with Mastodon on Vivaldi ( great browser too ) had the same thought about how Mastodon will change things

@mehdihasan

Think of how much more effective they might be when important things like that aren't at the mercy of capricious billionaires and their algorithms.

I do hope they find something better soon, whether it's here or somewhere else.

@mehdihasan twitter has been invaluable for building disabled communities. Lots of real work went into discussing and defining our place in society. It was a forum where many of us got to interact with other disabled people for the first time in their lives. Feels like akin to the burning of the library of Alexandria for disability culture. What a crime.
@Philipjames9 @mehdihasan so much agree. I’m part of a large community on Twitter for people with #type1diabetes. Just really hoping the #DOC (diabetes online community) finds its way to Mastodon.
@andricheli I’ve been a #T1D for 33 years, so we can start as a community of two 🙂💉
@RosaLSmothers @andricheli
I'll join to make a third!
@StephBoragina @andricheli We have a (diabetic) quorum! 😄💉
@andricheli @StephBoragina I don’t know about you two, but I am counting the days until Cost Plus Drugs includes insulin(s) in their offerings. Mark Cuban’s company is disrupting the Big Pharma/PBMs/pharmacy establishment that has kept insulin costs inexcusably, deadly high in the United States. Diabetics would no longer have to insulin ration; if they can sell insulin at an affordable rate (like the rest of the world) it would save lives.
@mehdihasan I don’t think that is it. I believe he intentionally acquired & tanked one of the world’s best sources of fast, easily accessible and reliable information precisely because that is what he and the many other enemies of democracy wanted to happen.
@mehdihasan It’s an abhorrent tragedy. We should never have allowed billionaires to gain such traction and ownership over our world

@mehdihasan I just signed into the birdsite to see how the shitstorm is going. Yikes.

I do not miss it at all. Good riddance.

@mehdihasan I believe it was purposeful. He doesn’t want us to be able to share info/organize
@mehdihasan He planned this. To take Twitter down, just like takeovers of ToysR US, bankrupted. Guess he thought it was taking too long and strong armed the take down process. What is sad, the platform is used by people all over the world to communicate in real time, issues happening in their community.
@mehdihasan I'd wager that was the point of what Elon is doing / has done.
@mehdihasan Yes, those and other voices are and will loosing reach. But ultimately, the lesson is that we can't let public spaces be private and commoditized. The fediverse is a better solution.
@mehdihasan
Just signed up here. So glad to see someone I respect and whose MSNBC show I watch all the time.
This site is a little hard to navigate but I'm trying!
@mehdihasan It's worth it to get them out of the silos.
@fallenpegasus @mehdihasan I guess I don't understand what you mean here. The virtue of Twitter was that you could have tens of millions of people on it and there were like-minded groups like groups for diaporas in various nations or minorities or different languages and interests. I always compared it to a huge cocktail party where you mainly stayed at the table with your friends but would sometimes walk around to see what other people were up to.
@admin @mehdihasan You can still do all that with the fediverse. Better. I honestly don't get what you don't get. I'm willing to teach/explain 1:1
@fallenpegasus @mehdihasan Its the federated timeview that tends to de-group people so that seems to be where the conflicts over tone show up. Twitter kept a lot of posts from different tables from disturbing other tables.
@admin @mehdihasan you say those words and i don't know what they mean. Do you want some sort of curated feed of people you don't actually follow?
@mehdihasan what does “own the libs” even mean?!?
Because he is an idiot, with who-knows-what agenda….let’s call things with their own names!
@mehdihasan @doctorcdf If they can be on Twitter they can be here too!
@mehdihasan @AZKtee Yes, hopefully the capacity can be stood up quickly.
@mehdihasan nothing happened man everything working fine

@mehdihasan I'm beginning to think that Musk is doing this deliberately to sabotage Twitter.

Because that makes slightly more sense than any other reason for this shit storm.

@grumpygrimnir @mehdihasan

Agree 1000%. #Twitter #destruction helping enable those who want to #oppress the masses.

But people can regroup and go elsewhere online, and also redevelop other non-online ways of organizing.

#Opportunity , #renewal , #redo , #regrowth in change.

@mehdihasan also, he's incredibly stupid. I know that's very counter to the narrative surrounding him but it's unequivocally true if you stop and really think about what he says and does
@mehdihasan a familiar face then !
@mehdihasan not something I'd considered, but so true. It's going to be really bad for so many people in a way that isn't just "oh no, my online persona is partially gone"
@mehdihasan and to assume all employees had nothing else to do but work
@mehdihasan m8, he wants to own everyone. literally.

@mehdihasan great to see you here on Mastadon highlighting the very real social impact of one man’s ego-driven take down of Twitter. Probably overly pollyannaish on my part but I do hope that a move to decentralized alternatives such as this platform end up creating a comparable alternative with more aligned operational philosophies and principles.

Thanks for all your excellent work Mehdi.

@mehdihasan Well said Mehdi. I was able to track the Hong Kong protests via Twitter! I actually had hope I might have luck to get my dental work funded through the site -- Now I honestly don't know.

& I already posted a story about how this will impact disability, small business, s work and mutual aid twitter. Ugh 😓😮‍💨 I really hope Twitter isn't done.

I need help & have so much more mutual aid work I want to do. It's been one way I can & have be an activist as a disabled person

@mehdihasan This is something I've been thinking about a lot today. How will this kind of stuff get attention?
@mehdihasan it’s just a tragedy, a shameful betrayal of humanity for one man’s hubris
@mehdihasan Thank you for saying this. It’s truly a privilege to be able to use #socialmedia for quick quips and laughs, but there are so many people who rely on #twitter to speak out against #inhumanity. I think the question now is how can we best help elevate their voices so that they don’t have to rely on the whims of #elon
@mehdihasan And yet, alternative platforms, like Mastodon, are available
@mehdihasan I just love your show!! Keep up the excellent work!
@mehdihasan nice to meet you here ser
@mehdihasan Dude, I would sit this one out. I still don't like you. Glad I have multiple servers.
