My #PhotoMonday is in my #WritingRoom: a 1950s floor lamp that was in my parents’ house growing up. It’s wonderful to sit and read here.

What’s in your #WritingRoom?

I was chatting with some #writer friends about writing sweet spots - the hours where the words come the easiest. One was a late night writer, another preferred afternoons. My sweet spot starts around 9am.

How about you? When do you write best?

Hey #writers especially those who work in #shortfiction and #kidlit - I have a speculative YA short story that’s around 11k and I’m trying to decide what to do with it. Are there any good markets for YA fiction of that length?

I can't remember if I mentioned this in this instance.

Yesterday, I created @authorindiespeak for indie authors interested in discussing the self-publishing industry and building meaningful relationships in their field. You may also want to follow and use the hashtag #authorindiespeak to participate in the ongoing conversation.

While drafting, every once in a while I need to pull out something I've written and polished and love to remind myself of what I'm capable of.

#Writers, what do you do to keep yourself going when you're drafting?

Book One, Draft 1: *regretfully taps backspace key, deleting a single sentence*

Book Two, Draft 462: *deletes entire paragraphs without remorse*

More #pacing thoughts in #story: #pace is about how and when revelations unfold. (Unfolding/ withholding deserves its own thread.)

On a technical level, and borrowing from Joan Silber, #time passes:

1) in #scene, which is 1:1 to #reader's time, e.g. "They pinched a chickpea";

2) in #summary, which condenses time, e.g. "A year passed"; or

3) what she calls "#habitual time," which feels scenic, but describes action over a period of time

Got around to #writing today for the first time in a few weeks, busy with job and kid, and I recalled a thing I saw on #Twitter, that I want to push back against: the idea to "get to work, and stop fucking around." Forcing yourself into a place you don't want to--or can't!--be sets yourself up for feeling badly about output AND process. I fully embrace fucking around as central to the #writingroom. I have never been more fruitful, or had more #fun, than when I #write whenever I want to, or can.
