My good friend Scott is close to finishing his book, Don't Shoot the Piano Tuner. I've had the good fortune to read the first draft. I think it's great, and I'm very proud to be helping to promote it.

The Day We Said Goodbye to the Birds

“Genocide Joe” is a marked man. Once a highly respected corporate microbiologist, now the scapegoat for a GMO-caused ecological disaster that’s turned San Francisco Bay toxic and poisoned thousands, Joe has lost everything: his career, his reputation, his wife, his home, and most of his friends. All he has left is his 18-month-old daughter, Daphne, the clothes on his back, and a chance to start over again, in a new town, where no one knows his face. To take that chance, all he needs to do is catch the bus out of town. But an unexpected transit outage has dumped him in Oakland, so now he needs to get to the next station on foot, while pushing a baby stroller. And hoping to pass unrecognized through a city where everyone hates him, and a lot of people want to kill him… Eco-fiction; hard science fiction; hopepunk; all-too-near-future science fiction. Also included is a short essay on the science underlying the story and another one on the real-world events that inspired it.

#ScribesAndMakers Jul 30: Whether or not you did everything you hoped to, what's something that went well this month?

I came up with a good way to fix my big fight scene, and I had to lie very still for 30 minutes for a medical procedure (I'm fine!), so I scripted the opening bits of it in my head. Once I get a chance, I'll write that down. Ideation is turning into a really important part of my process.

#WritersCoffeeClub July 30: What single book had the greatest impact on your writing?

There have been way too many to say with a straight face that one of them was the greatest impact. That's how that works.

#WordWeavers Day 30. SC POV: Are you physically strong? What is your greatest physical skill?

"Dude, yes. So strong. I have super powers." Huge grin. "I'm getting really good at duelling, too, and I can make all kinds of swords if I concentrate. I am going to kick ass once I'm finally in a real fight."

#PennedPossibilities 741: Is your SC an “easy person to love,” or is it the opposite?

Yes, all of them. They were raised to form friendships, to make communities.
