I will say here that I queried my agent through normal channels on Book 1 and was rejected (probably before the letter reached her desk).

However, I went to one of those pitching sessions at the DFW Writers conference and pitched (HORRIBLY!) to her there. She didn't say yes, but said to send me the sample. In the end, she refused that for reason x. When I fixed X, I went back and was offered representation

There are guides for this online:

- find that website with all the agents
- make a list of the ones in your genre and seem legit
- read their submission instructions and FOLLOW THEM
- send samples to each one, individually, one at a time
- keep going until you get a bite

I have no idea how effective this is, but that's the procedure, as I understand it.

In my current project, the last names are chosen to signify the characters' ethnicities. I don't want people to be able to read it and imagine white people. Sim Singh and Brant Huang are not white. The first names, I picked bc they were the first to jump to mind, except the lead, who's name is "Grace" bc she was originally mixed: Chinese/white.

None of my supporting characters are there, but they would hear a small creak and the wind rustling the leaves. They'd feel shade and sun on their faces. They'd smell soil and feel leaves and rocks under their feet. If they reached their arms out, they could touch the trees.

Through the trees, she sees the farm. She spent so much time trying to get home, but now she has to stay away so that she can be at home and not be a danger to anyone. So she's at her friend's farm for now: doing chores, doing video therapy, healing.
