#WritersCoffeeClub 26/4: Recommend a non-fiction book on writing.
I wouldn’t recommend any book on writing without a caveat. They tell you how Stephen King or Ursula K Le Guin does it, not necessarily how you should do it.
Anyway, my favourite non-fiction book that’s mostly about writing is ‘Terry Pratchett:A Life in Footnotes’ by Rob Wilkins.

#WordWeavers 26/4: How ‘high maintenance’ is your MC?
You’d have to ask Hedric, or Railu before him, but they’ll surely say that Jerya grew up fending for herself and has never entirely left that behind.
She rubs some people very much the wrong way, but that’s different, and generally they deserve it.

#PennedPossibilities 997 — Tell us about a particular “dream” or desire that your antagonist has.

To be left alone. To be allowed to wreak the havoc he enjoys so much. To leave the wreckage behind him as he goes. In reality, Isma wants for nothing else. He is a “simple” creature. Otherwise, he lacks nothing in terms of necessities or comforts. The man is a whirlwind of destruction, death, bloodshed, and a desire to torture, but he’s so much more than that. He can also be a clever mastermind, helpful, a voracious reader, wanting to learn everything that can be taught, a teacher to those he deems worthy of friendship, and he avidly enjoys the arts. His pros do not make up for the cons, but again, a layered antagonist can make all the difference in the world.

Catching up on a channel I follow on YT and was forced to watch an add for Terminix. The tagline was "They eat house," and I was a bit taken aback.
I love it!
When great copy lands, it LANDS.

Especially when it's selling bug spray.

#WritersCoffeeClub Share your current biggest creative frustration.

I'd love to get paid to write fiction--wouldn't we all!--but I have a job I love and pays well, so what I really want is a place to put writing up for free where people can encounter it and tell how it made them feel. I want (lack) an audience.

#WritersCoffeeClub Share a silly mistake you've made while writing.

I had characters in a space ship that used rotation to create gravity jump "down" an access tube towards the centre. I had a whole sequence about it, one that I really liked. And then I remembered that "down" on that kind of ship is *away* from the point of rotation and had to rewrite it.

Sigh.

So, I need to figure out a *methodology* for creating #ChapterBreaks. I have almost no intuitive sense of them.

I would love you all to tell me how *you* decide where to place chapter breaks?

It is moments of tension?

Does each chapter contain a narrative arc?

It is when you move to a different setting or POV character?

If it's "when it feels right," can you describe that feeling?

#WordWeavers Is there any political or moral value that your MC and antagonist agree on?

I don't think so? The things they agree on are simple, practical matters, and the things they disagree on are foundational moral positions: freedom and humanity are good vs. "people are stupid and dangerous, so *I* need to control them."

#WordWeavers Do your characters have any “tells” when they are lying?

It hasn't come up, but that's a good idea to tuck away in the back of my brain.
