Armed and Underground: Inside the Turbulent, Secret World of an American Militia

“The next election won’t be decided at a Ballot Box,” an AP3 leader wrote several months ago in a private Telegram chat. “It’ll be decided at the ammo box.”

The rise of anti-migrant vigilantes in Europe and its consequences

Across Europe, a new wave of anti-migrant vigilante groups has been emerging, especially in countries like Iceland, Poland, the Netherlands, and Northern Ireland. These self-styled protective forces, often sporting symbols like the iron cross or high-visibility vests, claim to patrol areas to secure... [More info]

Today in Labor History August 27, 1934: 7,000 Filipino lettuce cutters and mainly white packing shed workers went on strike against the powerful Salinas Valley growers and shippers, demanding union recognition & improved wages and working conditions. Many of the white workers were Dust Bowl refugees. Most of the Filipino workers had immigrated as U.S. nationals, after the U.S. took over the Philippines, in the wake of the Spanish-American and Filipino-American Wars, the latter of which included a genocide in which a quarter of a million Filipino civilians died of famine and disease. There was rampant persecution of Filipino workers in California. Laws prohibited Filipino women from immigrating to the U.S. and prevented Filipino men from consorting with Anglo women. The American Federation of Labor initially refused to recognize or support the Filipino Labor Union (FLU). Scabs and vigilantes viciously beat Filipino strikers and chased 800 out of the Salinas Valley at gunpoint. They also burned down a labor camp. Police arrested picketers and union leaders for violation of the Criminal Syndicalism laws (laws that prohibited advocating any change to the economic and political status quo). The FLU ultimately won a raise and union recognition. However, discrimination and racist violence against Filipinos continued.

Steinbeck wrote about the plight of Filipino migrant farmworkers in the Salinas Valley in a 1936 series of articles for the San Francisco News called “The Harvest of Gypsies,” which formed part of the basis for his novel, Grapes of Wrath. He said they were among the most discriminated, and best organized, ethnic group in the U.S. Their organizing, he went on to say, brought on terrorism against them by vigilantes and the government.

Today in Labor History August 25, 1921, the Battle of Blair Mountain began in Logan County, West Virginia. It was the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War, and the largest labor uprising in U.S. history. 10,000-15,000 coal miners battled 3,000 cops, private cops and vigilantes, who were backed by the coal bosses. Up to 100 miners died in the fighting, along with 10-30 Baldwin-Felts detectives and three national guards. Nearly 1,000 people were arrested. One million rounds were fired. And the government bombed striking coal miners by air, using homemade bombs and poison gas left over from World War I. This was the second time the government had used planes to bomb its own citizens within the U.S. (the first was against African American during the Tulsa pogrom, earlier that same year).

The Battle of Matewan had occurred just a year before. Baldwin-Felt private police tried to arrest Sheriff Sid Hatfield, who supported the miners, using a bogus arrest warrant. Unbeknownst to the detectives, armed miners had surrounded them. No one knows who shot first, but when the smoke had cleared, there were seven dead detectives, including Albert and Lee Felts, and four dead townspeople, including the mayor. On August 1, 1921, surviving members of Baldwin-Felts assassinated Hatfield in broad daylight, on the steps of Welch County courthouse, as his wife watched in horror. As news of his death spread, miners began arming themselves and threatened to march to the anti-union stronghold of Logan County to overthrow Sheriff Dan Chaffin, the coal company tyrant who murdered miners with impunity. Fearing a bloodbath, Mother Jones tried to dissuade them from marching. Many accused her of losing her nerve. The march led to all-out war, as the authorities sent in police, private cops, and deputized vigilantes to battle the miners.

I saw this video of one of #NaziDon's "#DeportationForce" roaming the streets of #DC and noticed something…

…at least FOUR DIFFERENT insignia: #DEA, #FBI, and *2* different "Police" patches (plus one man in full police uniform, and 2 with no insignia at all.)

What are all these people "from different agencies" doing patrolling TOGETHER? A uniformed police officer patrolling with FBI & DEA agents? I DON'T THINK SO.

My guess is these are #vigilantes cosplaying as gov't appointed #ICE agents.

Warning: r-word mentioned, nastiness regarding disabled people

Predator Hunters’ Tactics Draw Fans, but Concern Police and Advocates

Russell Goodwin, a self-styled predator catcher who objects to being called a vigilante, said he protects the public by feeding police cases and exposing predators. But his tactics frustrate police efforts, and only about half his targets, some of whom are intellectually disabled, are ever charged with a crime.

Oklahoma Watch

Today in Labor History August 1, 1921: Sheriff Sid Hatfield and Ed Chambers were murdered by Baldwin-Felts private cops. They did it in retaliation for Hatfield’s role in the Matewan labor battle in 1920, when two Felts family thugs were killed by Hatfield and his deputies. Sheriff Hatfield had sided with the coal miners during their strike. The private cops executed Hatfield and Chambers on the Welch County courthouse steps in front of their wives. This led to the Battle of Blair Mountain, where 20,000 coal miners marched to the anti-union stronghold Logan County to overthrow Sheriff Dan Chaffin, the coal company tyrant who murdered miners with impunity. The Battle of Blair Mountain started in September 1921. The armed miners battled 3,000 police, private cops and vigilantes, who were backed by the coal bosses. It was the largest labor uprising in U.S. history, and the largest armed insurrection since the Civil War. The president of the U.S. eventually sent in 27,000 national guards. Over 1 million rounds were fired. Up to 100 miners were killed, along with 10-30 Baldwin-Felts detectives and 3 national guards. They even dropped bombs on the miners from planes, the second time in history that the U.S. bombed its own citizens (the first being the pogrom against black residents of Tulsa, earlier that same year).

Several novels portray the Battle of Blair Mountain, including Storming Heaven, by Denise Giardina, (1987), Blair Mountain, by Jonathan Lynn (2006), and Carla Rising, by Topper Sherwood (2015). And one of my favorite films of all time, “Matewan,” by John Sayles (1987), portrays the Matewan Massacre and the strike leading up to it. The film has a fantastic soundtrack of Appalachian music from the period. And the great West Virginia bluegrass singer, Hazel Dickens, sings the title track, "Fire in the Hole." She also appears in the film as a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

@MugsysRapSheet My sense is that the Federal LE agencies have all been encouraged to BE vigilantes. These people are on the payrolls of agencies but are not bound by any previous internal rules and protocols. Possibly not bound by any laws, depending on the courts.

I had forgotten about "JadeHelm"…

In 2015: Uber paranoid Right wing Gun nuts were in hysterics over "#JadeHelm", an ordinary military training exercise that they believed President #Obama was using as cover to "invade #Texas" by sending U.S. military troops across the Oklahoma border via tunnels beneath abandoned Wal*Marts. (Seriously.) 🤦‍♂️

NOW, they are JUST FINE with sending U.S. troops into states… as long as those states are Blue. #GOPHypocrisy #NaziDon #1984in2025

D.C. residents rage at Trump's military crackdown

Jen Psaki looks back at the total paranoia among Republicans that a standard military exercise, Jade Helm, would turn into a domestic military invasion by President Obama. Now that Donald Trump is literally sending the military to control Washington, D.C., Republicans have apparently forgotten their concern about executive power grabs. Meanwhile, residents of Washington, D.C. do not appreciate federal forces in their neighborhoods, and across the country in Los Angeles, residents are patrolling to protect children from federal immigration officials.
