Buddhist monks gather in Montreal for Vesak celebrations
More than 50 Buddhist monks from around the world gathered in Montreal on Saturday to celebrate Visakha Puja, or Vesak, one of Buddhism’s holiest days. The event honoured the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death through prayer, offerings and meditation, while drawing diverse communities together.

For those not familiar with south Asian astrology, Visa Nekatha (Viśākhā Nakṣatra) is a lunar mansion historically associated with Vesak. Though Buddha said monks/nuns shouldn't practise astrology, Sri Lankans (including monks/nuns) often do.

The only mention I saw of Vesak, in The Guardian, this year, was this: '…as part of a prisoner amnesty marking a Buddhist religious holiday'. Would they ignore Christmas, Easter, Eid, Diwali…?
