2/2 : La fermeture des usines / The closure of factories
For six months, Nabila Halim and I went out to meet the residents of the town of Longwy.
During our meetings, they told us stories, asked questions, and shared their experiences of their relationships with others.
This work is conceived as an echo chamber, a more or less realistic and sensitive reflection of the residents of this very special town: a cross-border land, a land of immigration, a land of hope and abandonment.
From their words, we drew seven major themes: arrival in Longwy, racism, the Algerian War, factory closures, memories, home, and finally, the relationship with the Other today. This last theme emerged from our encounters, but also from those made by the students at Vauban College when they set out to find residents, criss-crossing their town and conducting short interviews with passers-by.

Bus Stop Chronicles

I just read that Martin Parr passed away yesterday. He was a giant in street photography circles with a fantastic library of unusual photos showing a slice of life wherever he had his camera.

I was lucky enough to attend a Zoom call he hosted last year, showing photos and telling stories.

So, today’s image has to be a street photo. A busy scene on St. Patrick Street, Cork in 2017.

Journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 15] retrouvailles avec Guy et Paulette 


En écoutant les entretiens réalisé durant la résidence, j’entends que Guy qui me parle de vitraux Majorelle représentant les ouvriers non loin de Longwy, à Longlaville. 
Je l’appelle, et il me propose gentiment de m’y amener (je n’ai toujours pas le permis...) et de me les faire visiter. Je suis ravie de pouvoir les revoir. La résidence se finie bientôt. Il s’agit des dernières photographies avant l’exposition.

[field note, Longwy, week 15]. Reunion with Guy et Paulette

While listening to the interviews recorded during the residency, I hear Guy telling me about Majorelle stained-glass windows depicting workers, located near Longwy, in Longlaville. I call him, and he kindly offers to take me there (I still don’t have my driver’s license...) and show them to me. I’m delighted to see them again. The residency is ending soon — these are the last photographs before the exhibition.

[Some information about our project]: From January to June 2021, together with Nabila Halim, we will carry out a photographic and sound project with the residents of Longwy and students of Vauban Middle School, exploring the theme of migration. [journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 13] échange (enfin!) avec Mado. 

Après plus de 4 mois à dormir régulièrement à l’hôtel, j’ose enfin aborder Mado, la tenancière de l’hôtel du nord. Je pense qu’elle nous avait beaucoup intimé lors de nos premiers séjours, et nous avons eu assez peu de contact. 
Madeleine (qui est connu de tout Longwy) a pris le temps de me raconter son histoire : l’immigration de ses parents de Yougoslavie, les étudiant•e•s qui venaient dans son bar durant mai 68, la fermeture des usines, la migration du travail vers le Luxembourg.. Madeleine, comme Louise ce matin, à un regard doux et positif sur la ville. C’est une ville à laquelle elle est attachée. Je regrette de ne pas avoir eu cette discussion plus tôt. J’ai découvert une mado bien plus drôle et joyeuse que ce que j’imaginais.

After months of staying at the Hôtel du Nord, I finally spoke with Mado, its owner, known by everyone in Longwy. She shared her story — her parents’ migration from Yugoslavia, May ’68, factory closures, and cross-border work. Her gentle, joyful view of the city deeply moved me.

[Journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 10] Détour près du haut fourneau 


En voulant aller au golf pour photographier de près le haut fourneau, je fais un détour par le chemin de la Senelle (nom d’une des 4 usines de sidérurgie). J’y resterais trois heures. Je découvre, petit à petit, comme lorsque l’on va cueillir des champions, de nombreux vestiges de cette usine. Je pensais que tout avait été effacé, rasé, mais en fait les restes débordent et s’étalent sur au moins 1 kilomètre. Je découvre un nouveau chemin. J’étais déjà passé par là une fois, je ne comprends pas comment j’ai pu passer à côté. J’ai hâte d’y retourner, avec un appareil photo fonctionnel cette fois ci (je me suis rendu compte que mon objectif était cassé sur le chemin).

[field note, Longwy, week 10]. A trip near the blast furnace

On my way to the golf course to take photo of the blast furnace, I made a diversion via the Chemin de la Senelle (named after one of the 4 steelworks). I stayed there for three hours. Little by little, as if picking champions, I discovered many of the remains of this factory. I thought everything had been wiped out, razed to the ground, but in fact the remains overflow and stretch for at least 1 kilometre. I discovered a new path. I'd been there once before, so I don't know how I missed it. I can't wait to go back, this time with a working camera (I realised my lens was broken on the way).

The city of Longwy has a history deeply intertwined with the steel industry. A city of workers’ struggles, a city of migration. Today, there are almost no traces left of this history.
Discovering this city for the first time, walking through its streets, I found myself asking many questions:
What do those who have seen the last blast furnace every day think? What legacy do we carry from a city? From the place we live in? Why is it impossible to get close to the blast furnace? Do the workers of Longwy’s émaux industry still feel connected to this heritage?

Note 2025 : On ne le répète jamais assez, mais un projet collaboratif — et tout projet ethnologique — n’existe que grâce aux personnes qui nous accueillent, partagent leur temps et s’investissent à nos côtés. Elles nous ouvrent leurs portes, nous laissent les accompagner pendant des mois, des années... Rien de tout cela ne serait possible sans elles.

Zone 54 is a dialogic photographic and sound documentary created between 2012 and 2017, in collaboration with Emy, Le Fils, Gaëtan, Ingrid and Mike, Franck, and my faithful #Pentax67.
A huge thank you to everyone I’ve met since 2012 who has contributed to this project. A special thanks to Emy, whose incredible dedication has lasted for eight years now! His series on festival dogs is featured here, and we’re even thinking about a sequel :)

Il y a les manifestations. Et il y a le bénévolat. Le réseau des organismes communautaires est important ; il est complémentaire ou palliatif d'actions publiques insuffisantes ou parfois même inexistantes. L'engagement des bénévoles est au cœur de ces organismes. L'implication, le temps donné, les compétences transmises, le sentiment d'utilité, les moments partagés... Documenter le bénévolat, c'est percevoir quelque chose de cette sociabilité à l'œuvre.

There are events and demonstrations. And then there's volunteering. The network of community organizations is important; it complements or compensates for insufficient or sometimes non-existent public action. The commitment of volunteers is at the heart of these organizations. The involvement, the time given, the skills passed on, the feeling of usefulness, the moments shared... Documenting volunteering is a way of seeing something of this sociability at work.
