3/3 : Today
For six months, Nabila Halim and I went out to meet the residents of the town of Longwy.
During our meetings, they told us stories, asked questions, and shared their experiences of their relationships with others.
This work is conceived as an echo chamber, a more or less realistic and sensitive reflection of the residents of this very special town: a cross-border land, a land of immigration, a land of hope and abandonment.
From their words, we drew seven major themes: arrival in Longwy, racism, the Algerian War, factory closures, memories, home, and finally, the relationship with the Other today. This last theme emerged from our encounters, but also from those made by the students at Vauban College when they set out to find residents, criss-crossing their town and conducting short interviews with passers-by.

IN FISHBONE, ZEEBRUGGE

In het werk van beeldend kunstenaar Elke
Desutter staat het lichaam centraal. Voor de
expo ‘ALL HANDS ON DECK’ fotografeerde
ze delen van het lichaam van bewoners uit
(Zee)Brugge en verbindt ze hen in een in-situ
installatie in Fishbone.

Journal de terrain, Longwy, semaine 15] bilan avec les élèves de 4eD


Dernier jour en classe avec les élèves de 4eD. J’en profite pour faire un bilan à travers 2 exercices : tout d’abord, je leur demande de noter sur un bout de papier le premier mot qui leur vient à l’esprit quand ils pensent au travail réalisé cette année avec moi et Nabila. À ma grande surprise, ce n’est pas la photo qui est ressortie le plus, mais le sujet que nous avions abordé (l’immigration), et le fait « d’avoir l’avis des personnes » et d’apprendre. 
Ensuite, je leur ai posé 5 questions (visible sur la photo). Bilan : si c’était à refaire, ils le referaient. On ne peut avoir de meilleures réponses. 
Je suis enthousiaste de leur réponse, et joyeusement surprise du grand intérêt qu’ils ont eu à aller à la rencontre des personnes. Pourtant, plusieurs fois lors du micro trottoir des adultes leur ont dit que les jeunes d’aujourd’hui ne s’intéressaient plus à rien. C’est un beau pied de nez. Je suis fière du travail que nous avons accompli avec Nabila tous ensemble. 

Heureusement ce n’est pas notre dernière séance. La semaine prochaine nous nous revoyons tous ensemble et avec Nabila à la Mairie de Longwy Haut pour installer l’exposition.

Last day in class with the 4eD students. For our final session, I asked them to write the first word that came to mind about our project with Nabila — most mentioned immigration and learning from others rather than photography. When asked if they’d do it again, they all said yes. I’m proud of their curiosity and empathy, especially against the cliché that “young people don’t care.” Next week, we’ll meet again at Longwy-Haut City Hall to set up the exhibition together.

[plus d’infos sur notre projet] La ville de Longwy a une histoire intimement liée avec celle de la sidérurgie. Ville des luttes ouvrières, ville de migration. Il ne reste aujourd’hui presque plus de trace de cette histoire. De janvier à juin 2021 nous réaliserons avec Nabila Halim un travail photographique et sonore avec les habitant•e•s de Longwy et les 4e D du collège Vauban autour de la thématique de la migration. Cette belle aventure est possible grâce à l’association Caranusca et la ville de Longwy.

[Some information about our project]: From January to June 2021, together with Nabila Halim, we will carry out a photographic and sound project with the residents of Longwy and students of Vauban Middle School, exploring the theme of migration. This wonderful adventure is made possible thanks to the Caranusca Association and the city of Longwy.
