One Japanese phrase unlocks every Pokémon card showcase in Japan:
"Sumimasen, showcase onegaishimasu."
That gets staff to retrieve cards from the display case. Even just saying "showcase" usually works. The best cards are always behind glass, and staff are happy to pull them out for you to inspect.
No fluency required; just politeness and a smile.
Always carry cash in Japan. Many Pokémon card shops are Cash Only.
PDG, some Ninnin locations, and several independent shops won't accept cards.
ATMs at 7-Eleven and the post office accept foreign cards. Withdraw enough each morning to cover planned shopping.
Most Pokémon card shops in Japan open at noon and close at 8 PM. That gives you an 8-hour daily window.
Start mornings at Pokémon Centers when they restock sealed packs. Hit TCG shops after noon. Plan your route the night before using Google Maps to maximize every hour.
I learned this the hard way across 301 shops.
