Made the change from BCBS basic to MHBP consumer this year. Just planning ahead as I believe you don’t have to pay FICA taxes on deductions directly from payroll. Where do these payroll contributions get made? Can you change the amount you’re deducting mid year?

Got Approved for Federal Disability Retirement. My Law Firm Went Silent. GRB Has Been Incredible
Hey everyone, I wanted to share this for anyone going through federal disability retirement or waiting on OPM and wondering what happens after you finally get approved.Quick background. I was with the Department of Justice and went through the disability retirement process with a law firm (Harris). They handled the application phase and, to be fair, got the approval done. Once that approval hit though, it was basically radio silence. No roadmap. No next steps. No guidance on benefits, insurance elections, or how to actually get paid. It felt like “Congrats, you’re approved… good luck.”That’s where GRB came in, and honestly, the difference has been night and day. I had a call with a GRB benefits specialist, and she walked me through everything in plain English. Last day of pay, how OPM uses that to trigger interim payments, what gets sent to OPM, and how retroactive pay works back to my separation date. She explained why OPM can’t even start payments without that last pay status confirmed and took ownership of sending it over the same day. No hand-waving. No guessing.Where GRB really shined was benefits. I learned the difference between canceling FEHB and suspending it. This is huge. Because my family has CHAMPVA, I don’t need FEHB right now, but instead of permanently canceling it, I can suspend it indefinitely and keep it in my back pocket for life. No premiums. No billing. But I can re-activate it later if circumstances change. That’s not something my law firm ever explained. Same with life insurance. We went through Basic, Option A, B, and C, cost projections, age-based increases, and what actually makes sense when you’re retiring young. She gave a recommendation, explained why, and made it clear I can always adjust later through OPM’s Services Online.Bottom line: Harris got me approved, but GRB is the reason I actually understand what’s happening now and how money and benefits will flow. They’re assembling the full package, bypassing payroll delays, sending things directly to OPM, and setting expectations for interim pay versus full annuity. That peace of mind matters when you’ve already been through enough.I’m posting this here because I know how confusing and stressful this process is, especially once approval hits and you feel dropped. If you’re in the middle of federal disability retirement, deferred resignation, OPM waiting, FEHB decisions, life insurance questions, or interim pay anxiety, feel free to ask.
