Was federal service the last ticket to American Dream?
I've given a lot of thought to why people are so angry with us. Why they want us to be 'traumatized'. Forgive me the latitude to flesh something out, please. When America was 'great'-- 1952?. Employees had the expectation of getting a career at a business that they kept for their lives. They earned a pension, health care, and the pay was high enough they could afford a house and have only one person at the job. That person was the white guy but I will get to that in a moment.The federal government offered the same and, using its power, actually acted as an example of what a job should look like for EVERYONE. We have paid sick leave, 13 holidays, and we typically only work 40 a week. This is what unions, coal miners, and textiles workers fought for in the past and what the federal government felt should be respected as an example to all. The federal government was one of the first employers to treat all ethnicities equally and bring them on board. This then expanded out to other business and promoted legislation for EEO, bringing women in. This continues today with additional new expectations such as paternity and maternity leave to promote health and family bonding (Thanks Ivanka). Federal government was the first major employer to provide a greater minimum wage for its contractors (cleaning staff, general contractors, labs etc.).It was all a good trade, as we work in service of people and not ourselves --- we realize that government work is inherently non-profit. So we selflessly took lower pay to do unmarketable but important tasks knowing we couldn't really go somewhere else with our skills. It was a fair trade - good benefits and security to provide to the building our country. I count Krill for God's sake knowing it won't get me a job somewhere else.In the end, WE maintained the opportunity for the American Dream and this was in the past supported by bipartisan actions, even if not equally.MEANWHILE, since the "Great ole days" when this was available to white men, that same class continued to vote out their own dreams, perhaps as a way to block others from having it. They kept seeing how 'bootstraps' are the answer not realizing how rich people got rich and HOW RICH THEY ACTUALLY ARE. Held up as icons. They forgot the days of Robber Barrons and muckrakers that their Grandparent saw. As the 70s and 80s rolled around our country turned to value stocks and boards and from there all shit broke loose. And here we are in a split economy of jobs - one focussed on profit and the other focussed on building America.These same people are now angry. And they feel left out or simply do not want their taxes going to the 'well to do." If they can'ty have it - why should we. IN the regard are we really the Well-to-do our are we the expectation of what a career should look like. Are we the rich people and stock holders they should fight with.Such a fucked up place we are. We went from the federal government being a beacon that the working class could gain from with the legislation that floated down.THEY, IN THEIR ANGER AND LOSES,ARE POINTING AT THE WRONG PLACE. They want the security but not the self-sacrifices. They want the 1950s where only a select group of people got this. They too have forgotten what their grandparents knew coming out of depression, WW2, and the civil rights movements -- they were HELPED by the government and governement jobs (CCC, WPA, New Deal, voting rights acts).You'll hear them bitch this was all about NAFTA. Bullshit. NAFTA was all about stocks - not them.Is it spite. Is it anger? IS it that they think if the government gets out of the way they can be rich too? Is it pure bigotry? Are all of the protections the government, by example, passed down to society simply woke?The current approach goes back the 90's with Calvin pissing on the teams they didn't like. At that point we switched as a society from caring about what we loved and rather hating what the other loves. Perhaps, MAGA needs to point at us as what they want, rather then tear us apart becuase they couldn't get it.
