currently reading The Children’s Machine by Seymour Papert – and it’s sparking so many thoughts 💭

thank you @nele for the recommendation 🙏

one thing that really hits: video games and school could actually be a great match – if start seeing computers and digital tech as tools for exploration, creativity, and real thinking.

Papert’s vision of learning by making feels more urgent than ever.

A discussion in our Matrix chat today:

Q: What is Constructionism?

A: "It is a bit more than learn by doing. We add some additional components: (1) scaffolding in the form of well-designed microworlds; (2) collaborative environment that includes peer and mentors; (3) tools for reflection; (4) the ability to share and expand upon the tools and the content." -- @walterbender

The arguments from your thread (and from the essay by @cedricchin and the book by @gvwilson) remind me of Martin Heidegger's dialogical concept of teaching as "let learn". A while ago I posted a key passage here on Mastodon,

There is interesting biographical backup on Heidegger's actual teaching practice by Hannah Arendt, I posted some quotes here:

Thank you for your stimulating excerpts and the link to the article by Cedric Chin, @cedricchin. A highly instructive and illuminating essay on teaching, perceived as enabling the student to experience the subject through (suitably framed) practice. It resonates fully with my own lifelong experiences as an academic teacher.

I've followed the link to Greg Wilson's excellent book (thank you, @gvwilson!). A treasure trove of pedagogical wisdom.

New Blog Post. It is about my ISTE (international society of technology in education) RFP to present. I'd love it if people would look at my proposal and see if I have any mistakes. Also, I have a new friend. Alonso Martinez. He works at Google AI and is an artist. I recommended him to present a keynote at ISTE.

ISTE Proposal and Alonso Martinez

I just submitted an RFP to ISTE , and I would be shocked if I was selected. Below is a link to  my submission, and if you see anything t...

Anyone remembers the #OLPCXO? The device from from the #OneLaptopPerChild tech project disguised as #humanitarian?
Spotted one “in the wild”, last week. It was running Ubuntu instead of Sugar. And its use had little to do with the original purpose of the “$100 laptop for children in the developing world”.
To this day, the whole project is a reminder of the dangers of #Technosolutionism and the perils of #NarrowThinking, despite #Papert and #constructionism

Sure, it may be true that reading and research about technology in education needs to be current. However going back to a classic (is 40 years classic?) and comparing 1980s ideas with current experience is quite the trip. Maybe our current experience isn’t as advanced or as progressive as it could be. We have more useful tools, but we have more garbage too. #Education #EdTech #Papert
