Computer scientist Yann LeCun:...
I wake up to more emails advertising university jobs, but not lecturers (or senior lecturers). No, these grade 6/7 salaries are for 'study advisors' or god forbid 'success partners'. As if Capita replaced Faculty, unis can now can look forward to being success managed, student to staff to redundancy. And its all decided with the big data imaginary.
This morning’s lecture: #Anthropocene #Technosolutionism essentially spends an hour defining these two terms, their interrelations, and sampling some artistic projects past and present that relate to them.
It’s also grown into an opportunity to bring Patricia Johanson’s practice out of obscurity (look her up!)
And, it’s the first time in years that I have impulsively chosen a lecture topic that successfully builds on my own research, making it so much easier to write!
Hype driven vapoware, isn't it?

What a dumb piece of advice.
Five years ago, when construction began in Iceland on the world’s largest system for capturing and storing carbon dioxide directly from the air, the project was seen as a ‘springboard’ for larger, global-scale projects with ‘megaton removal capacities.’ However, the project’s failure reveals the misguided nature of climate engineering: The advancement of technological solutions involving large-scale interventions in the Earth’s geochemical and biogeochemical cycles distracts from the systemic causes of the climate catastrophe and exacerbates the problem. Annette Schlemm takes stock.

Could someone PLEASE explain to the minister that the law and regulation has sharp, age-related boundaries for various things not because people suddenly become responsible or less vulnerable on their 18th birthday but because the law needs to appeal to something verifiable rather than the ethically significant but fuzzily-boundaried concepts like 'adult' and 'child'.
