Monte Rio Redwoods recently went from being a dinky park with two steep trails in the woods with no views- to a vast wilderness crisscrossed by beautiful singletrack trails, fantastic vistas. All this lumber land (it was owned by the Levi family) is now here for your pleasure - if you like to climb.

For my 20+ years here this land was always sketchy to visit- but property is theft and the public got what was left after the tree people cut their fill.

When you get out into the folded and forested hills, ten miles feels like a long run indeed. 3200ft elevation definitely requires a slower pace than in the flats. The whole area is draped with fantastic singletrack... and no people!

Ah, the long run, and exploration.
Toured some ancient byways.
Visited neighborhoods I've never seen before, though I've lived in the area 25 years. Such is how we get to know geography and demography. Running provides a stealthy way to observe and connect with vast territories.

I started near the town of Monte Rio and wended my way to Guerneville and back.
