Per quasi 20 anni, lo squalo di bamboo maculato (Chiloscyllium caeruleopunctatum), endemico del Madagascar, è rimasto scientificamente non rilevato e non documentato. Recentemente, però, i ricercatori hanno trovato quattro nuovi esemplari di questo squalo “perduto” grazie a indagini nei villaggi di pescatori e nella collezione ittica di un’università malgascia. Queste scoperte, unite alle interviste con i pescatori, suggeriscono che la specie possa essere più comune di quanto si pensasse in precedenza, come evidenziato da un nuovo studio.
Il blu-spotted bamboo shark, così chiamato per le macchie blu e bianche sul suo corpo marrone, è stato descritto per la prima volta nel 1914, basandosi su un esemplare catturato al largo del Madagascar. Una seconda registrazione della specie è stata effettuata 92 anni dopo, con una fotografia di uno squalo catturato nel 2006.

The Discovery of the Spotted Bamboo Shark
For almost 20 years, the spotted bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium caeruleopunctatum), endemic to Madagascar, has remained scientifically undetected and undocumented. Recently, however, researchers have found four new specimens of this “lost” shark thanks to investigations in fishing villages and the ichthyic collection of a Malagasy university. These discoveries, combined with interviews with fishermen, suggest that the species may be more common than previously thought, as highlighted by a new study.
The blue-spotted bamboo shark, so named for the blue and white spots on its brown body, was first described in 1914, based on an specimen caught off the coast of Madagascar. A second recording of the species was made 92 years later, with a photograph of a shark caught in 2006.
