Opal, one of two white #ravens who are longtime residents at North Island Wildlife Recovery Center. She's not albino, please ignore my verbal error in vid.

Opal arrived at NIWRA centre in 2024 after being found with damaged feathers and reduced flight ability. In addition to her injuries, Opal has a condition called #leucism, which causes partial loss of pigmentation, making her more visible to predators, and results in weaker feather condition. She will remain at the centre.

On Sunday we visited our local RSPB site, Strumpshaw Fen.

Becky spotted a leucistic male Pheasant! We’d never seen one before, it was roaming in the horse paddocks next to the site.

Third encounter with this leucistic Red-tailed Hawk. Which has apparently been in the area over a decade. #leucism #leucistic #Hawk #Birdsky
Black Sheep

A starling with leucism in the midst of its flock.
Unfortunately, I could not get closer or find a better angle, so you'll have to live with this more artsy processing.

White crow

A rare leucistic Eurasian crow spotted in Diyarbakır province, Turkey. Leucism is a genetic condition that causes partial or complete loss of pigment in a bird’s feathers while preserving its normal eye colour.

Uniqueness
A leucistic otter feeds on a catfish in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. #Leucism, a lack of melanin, resulting in pale or white fur. Animals with this condition can be more vulnerable because they don’t have their normal camouflage.

Not only did I save up to see her in-person, but I also heavily researched her on social media, directly asked Adelaide Zoo to confirm her birthdate, curated a chronological playlist of her life and updated her Meerkats Wiki page. I even had her listed in the safety plan I referred to whenever my mental health was at its worst. Rest In Peace, old girl 🤍
