Freeway Billboards are Banned in Four States.

Overview Within the United States of America, nearly every state permits billboards on freeways throughout the nation. However, four (4) states, all identifiable by natural beauty and tourist interests, actually ban freeway billboards, though not freeways themselves: Vermont, Maine, Alaska, and Hawaii. Therefore, novaTopFlex would not have a freeway billboard in the most realistic of realistic contexts, and even if the Three Identities had billboards, the coverage would likely prioritize the […]

WWII, the autobahn, Ike, the Interstates, and one-mile-in-five

Earlier this summer I was talking with a fellow veteran and the subject of “one-mile-in-five” on the Interstate highways came up. The vague gist is that before WWII, Germany designed it…

Grew up in #flawridah tracking hurricanes on a paper chart from radio. Parents teaching kids geography, and staying busy.

I have never witnessed a bigger wider faster rainier #hurricane than #helene. Water still rising and flooding homes in #charlotte and #lee counties in #florida while #georgia in the path. #upstateSC had more power outages than anywhere. 108 mph winds atop #mtmitchell aka #grandfathermountain in #nc. 2 #interstates closed.

There are many beautiful drives to take across the Hawaiian Islands. The H3 that drops you into Kaneohe is one of those drives. Indy was able to take in the beauty and majesty of the Ko'olau Range on the windward coast of Oahu this past week.

"ordinances like the one proposed in #Llano... make it illegal to transport anyone to get an abortion on roads within the city or county limits...

Antiabortion advocates... are targeting regions along #interstates and in areas with #airports, with the goal of blocking off the main arteries out of #Texas and keeping pregnant #women hemmed within the confines of their antiabortion state."

Highways are the next antiabortion target. One Texas town is resisting.

A new ordinance, passed in several jurisdictions and under consideration elsewhere, aims to stop people from using local roads to drive someone out of state for an abortion

John Steinbeck on #interstates:

"No roadside stands selling squash juice, no antique stores, no farm products or factory outlets. When we get these thruways across the whole country, as we will and must, it will be possible to drive from New York to California without seeing a single thing."

We mythologize highways, but they’ve damaged communities of color

Last year, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg unveiled new efforts to address the problematic racial legacy of interstate highway construction, dedicating $1 billion to “reconnect cities and…
