Who lives in a city where extreme heat is a serious threat to everyone who lives there or visit?

In Phoenix we are all finally entering the “heat season” expected every summer. But for a wild fluke in March where the daily temperatures went over 107° and we all had to turn on AC again, the last weeks have been great. Now, 103° for likely 10 days before worse, I wake to the headline article and photo of The Guardian US in Phoenix, long a symbol of a US city who keeps tallies of how many heat-related deaths May to October. A few years ago “only” 300, last year over 500.

NOT at all looking forward to the next 4 months. No rain at this home now at least 4 months and possible 3-4 months more. Not good. Meanwhile the data centers for Ai being built right now and one the the largest new ICE concentration camp warehouses is being readied for thousands, just 15 miles from here. Come to the US! It’ll be fun!

‘Woefully unprepared’: extreme heat will double US hospitalizations by 2040, study finds

Sharp rise in hospital visits will in turn drive up annual healthcare costs for heat-related conditions to over $1bn

📢 Our new open-access paper is out in Urban Climate on using three plan evaluation approaches to better understand how Arizona cities are advancing heat resilience. We find that the plans have high-quality participation and coordination but lack detail on vulnerability and climate change uncertainty. We also found opportunities to better target heat mitigation policies to the highest heat risk areas, diversify heat-related policies, and improve plan integration efforts.

This study is the culmination of several years of plan evaluation work through the SW-IFL with @SaraMeerow, Malini Roy, Shaylynn Trego, Saeideh Sobhaninia, and many University of Arizona and Arizona State University students.
