As China runs away from the rest of the world in developing renewable energy, its coal mining industry is facing the prospect of major change. That includes the northern province of Shanxi, which turns out nearly one-third of China's coal and would be the world's largest producer if it was its own country. Officials in Shanxi and the city of Datong don't want miners to be left behind. They're pinning some of their hopes for new jobs on growing tourism to sites like the Yungang Grottoes, an ancient and significant area of caves and Buddhist carvings. Some miners are making the transition while others are fearful of leaving good jobs. And few think that Shanxi will leave coal behind entirely because it's an important safety net for energy security.

The current crisis demonstrates that advanced economies should hasten the transition to renewable energy sources and away from hydrocarbons.”

Australia Institute research shows a 25% tax on gas exports would raise $17 billion each year to fund essential services. Nearly $50 million every single day, seven days a week, flowing to multinational LNG exporters instead of Australian schools and hospitals. This single policy could have funded free childcare or free university and TAFE for all Australians over the same period. Help take on the gas industry!
However, according to FracTracker, it's actually $760 billion annually in subsidies, tax breaks, and unpriced externalities.
IMF estimates that global fossil fuel subsidies (incl unaccounted costs of climate change, pollution-related health issues, and environmental damage) reached $7 trillion in 2022, (U.S. share being 35% of the global total).
