Katie Couric interviews Dr. Timothy Cannon, gastroenterologist and oncologist who conducted a study on elite endurance athletes and colorectal cancer. Dr Cannon presented his findings at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology [ASCO] Annual Meeting in Chicago (link below). He discusses a possible link between runner's colitis and colorectal cancer.

Cannon: it's going to take a huge effort to figure this out, but it is definitely real. I see them in our office every week, you know, patients under under 45, you under 40, often under 30 with colorectal cancer. I don't really remember seeing it that often, you know, 15 years ago.

Cannon: I think um uh the most common ones are bleeding in your stool. You know, that's a red flag that and again that back to the marathoners. So many of them were told it was normal if
you run. I would not accept that answer

Couric: Or they have hemorrhoids, right? People blow doctors blow people off and say, "Oh, don't worry."

Cannon: Right. Exactly. Yeah. That happens all the time. So - but bleeding in the stool is a sign.

Cannon: Abdominal pain is also a common symptom, but it's not there all the time. None of these are, in fact. So I think even having one of those things is enough of a reason to try to get checked out.

Yesterday was 2y since J fitted on the kitchen floor & went to hospital.

2y since I had to say I couldn't properly care for her anymore (thank fuck my son was there in support). 2y since admitting I was scared. 2y since J's been home. 2y grieving (ongoing). 😢

I missed the date, but was visiting anyway. 🙂

J was delighted to see me, and stayed happy the whole visit, even getting some words out. Does she still recognise me? In some way, I believe so. (cont)

You take your wins as they come, & they've been few & far between since J developed #Alzheimers (she now lives in a small care home).

But you know what? She was really pleased to see me yesterday. Mostly non verbal now, J exclaimed "here he is" as they pulled up to our meeting, & did a little dance with a huge smile. She later reacted just as wonderfully to a video of her sister's last visit.

Sometimes I feel like we're strangers to her. Little wins like this prove we're not. 😊

It's #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth. When my father was diagnosed in the 80s in his mid-50s, the different kinds of #dementia & #Alzheimers weren't known. When I met #neurologist #BruceMiller, he explained that the real diagnosis was #earlyonset Alzheimer's w/the #logopenic variant (word-finding). The #diagnosis came late (death had already come) but what a relief to have the words & a deeper understanding of what turned my father's life, mine, & my family's inside out.
