As Ebola surges in Congo, women face the greatest risks as caregivers

Women in eastern Congo are often the first caregivers when family members fall ill. That puts them at high risk during this Ebola outbreak of a type that has no approved treatment or vaccine. History shows women are disproportionately affected in Ebola outbreaks. Even health workers say they lack protective gear in this outbreak, and everyday people have even less. Congolese authorities report 344 confirmed cases, including 60 deaths. There is distrust of health facilities because of fear and misinformation around the outbreak. That's another factor keeping people away from clinics and in women’s care.
