Bjørn SætrevikEarlier this summer I received a warning from Meta Quest that my 19 year old account was being used by a child.* They wanted me to confirm my age by sending them a photo of a government ID or credit card, which I was reluctant to do. Hence they suspended my Facebook, Instagram and Messenger account, I let the reactivation period lapse.
I'm actually glad it happened, this was the push I needed to de-Facebook my life. Luckily I had already downloaded and deleted most of my data from the services.
* I still don't know what caused this, it could be that my kids' use of a Quest headset on my account was analyzed in some way.

Quel che mi preoccupa è che *nessuno* sta proponendo Infomaniak (probabilmente per le controversie correlate), e io c'ho trasferito due caselle Gmail con dominio .me (e qualche servizio lo schifa, malemale).
Mi sa che non mi dovevo fidare di lealternative, amen. Finirò per spostarmi n'altra volta...

Finally got through the process of downloading my old Facebook and couple of Instagram accounts data today. Pretty extensive! Had wait several days on Facebook alone.
Just clicked to confirm deletion of ALL my Meta accounts and couldn't be happier!
I have also mostly finished moving all +200 online accounts using my various gmail and outlook emails over to Proton Mail aliases! Coming for you next Google and Microsoft, so watch out!
It's hard work, but take back your data, privacy, and peace of mind from these big tech companies that profit from your doomscrolling and selling your data!

*edited to add: there are often open-source alternatives, many of which need help with everything from translation to documentation to writing code. That is to say, I acknowledge that for many interactions, my posting the hashtag on it's own is reductionist, but perhaps where Manufacturing Consent seems relevant, we can trace our steps back and figure out the point we started consensually engaging with the entity that is or seems to be manufacturing consent.
There's probably a spectrum of degrees of choice represented at those points we started consensually engaging with the other entity, depending on (em)urgency of the customer's need and degree of monopoly supplier holds. Eg.: emergency medical care > insulin pump > railway ticket.
The user has to consent to all of those things, but obviously at one end of the spectrum is "or death", and moving away from that things get more relaxed.

For users who just want instant messaging & group-chat, is it worth mentioning Delta Chat?
It leverages email, so all it needs is for the user to make an email address for it, which is an achievable goal for most people.
Obviously I accept Signal is the easiest to "sell", because it has voice/video calling, and we can just say it's the one US cabinet members use, so it's sort of a "household name".

After using Facebook for over - what, 20 years? - my profile has finally been deleted. It was fun until it wasn't. Results: more new social connections, with less stress and anxiety. Not having to be a donor of data to Meta is also a huge relief.
