More #SilentSunday stuff.
These two animal drinking troughs were already in place when we bought the house, but leaked, and so never properly filled up. The previous owners had also covered them up. We relined them and now they are fed by rainwater from the roof of the house via the guttering and an underground pipe. The second one serves as an overflow to first, and when that is full, it overflows into the garden. They regularly host toads, dragonfly larvae, and the occasional grass snake, and the birds use it as their personal spa.

A few years ago, we were lucky enough to be able to buy a small wood adjoining our garden, for a pittance to boot (that's rural France for you). It had been left to it's own devices for years, because the owners didn't live anywhere nearby, but back in the fifties sixties, was actually a tiny vineyard and a chestnut tree orchard. I've found one or two small chestnut trees struggling to grow amongst the brambles, but no grapes whatsoever. I've made a few clearings, which have filled naturally with wildflowers, such as these beautiful Greater Stitchwort. The plumbago has also taken over and flowers pretty much at the same time.

With the arrival of the rain (finally!), I took some time to go out back into our small wood. The plumbago is coming into flower, which is fortunate for the woodland bumblebees, as it seems to be one of their primary sources of nectar. I'm no David Attenborough, and filming with a small moving target with a phone was more of a challenge than I expected! Apologies in advance for the inability to follow the bee at the end, which was just out of shot at the bottom of the frame. At least the birds and the rain contributed to the atmosphere 😀
