New Books (part IV)

'Quest for the New Moral World' by John F. C. Harrison. A history of the #Owenist movement in #Britain and the #USA Robert Owen was a #bourgeois philanthropist, factory-reformer and #Utopian #Socialist thinker who, by the mid-1820's, had somewhat ironically become the figurehead of a genuinely working-class based #political #trade_union and #CoOperative movement. The Owenists would be a major influence on #Marx and the #Chartists in the #1840s

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1839, the last large-scale armed uprising in British history occurred. In the #NewportRising, about 4000 #Chartists stormed Newport demanding the right to vote. Parliament had refused petitions, leading to a revolt. The progress towards democracy is messy.

Events in LA remind us that in times past, when the state uses excessive force against its own citizens, it ultimately was on the wrong side of history. In the UK, we too have a shady past of parallel events and movements: #Levellers #Chartists #Peterloo #Suffragettes to name a few. #LA
Memorial to the Newport Rising, a Chartist demonstration put down by troops in South Wales in 1839.

The original monument was created in 1978 in Newport city centre, but demolished in 2013. This roughly-half-size replica was erected in Rogerstone, the village where the Chartists gathered the night before the Rising, in 2019.

@ChrisMayLA6 @RichardJMurphy Unfortunately, what Murphy fails to recognize is the "reset" we need is #LandValueTax #LVT. The #Chartists understood this over 150 years ago, the #Georgists understood this over 100 years ago. Hell, even Winston Churchill understood this. But here we are, in 2024, rehashing the same old arguments, whilst the landed get richer and the landless get poorer.

I have never seen a man get so much right, and then fail to make the final leap, as Richard Murphy.

Society for the Study of Labour History

Today in Labor History June 16, 1836: The London Working Men's Association was formed, launching the Chartist movement. The Chartists took their name from the People's Charter, which demanded universal suffrage for men, regardless of social class. The movement appealed to skilled workers, not the masses of unskilled laborers. They followed the utopian socialism of Robert Owen. The movement lasted from 1838 to 1857. America’s first cop, Allan Pinkerton, creator of the Secret Service & persecutor of the Molly Maguires, was a radical participant in the Chartist movement before becoming the bulldog of capitalists. While the Chartism was primarily a constitutional movement, there was a radical, insurrectionary wing. Pinkerton was a part of this wing. He fought cops, destroyed property, set fires and had to flee the UK in order to avoid imprisonment.
